  1. Some good news; the soft parts will be in here within a week or so. I am still waiting on the Z v.4 coil and X coils until a later container. Z v.3 coils from the 15/18" are VERY similar to the v.4 coils, though.
  2. Amps are here. We'll be testing and shipping as quickly as possible.
  3. That looks nasty ; someone called me and told me about it over the weekend
  4. http://www.sundownaudio.com/index.php/return-authorization-form.html RMA form for any sort of problem that requires a return.
  5. Dealers should be taking down pre-ordered any time now. Ordering won't be open officially again to the public until they are in stock.
  6. We are looking at roughly end of April still ; +/- any typical customs clearance times.
  7. The X motor reaches bottom at 50mm one-way ; so if you hit any more than that the coil would bottom. So yes, that is the limit.
  8. The tabs are for the terminals ; they are production E8 v.2 frames so should be fine. I can send you a pic of how it looks on a complete v.2
  9. vs what, regular is 50% in the gap? i dunno if its 50% but i know underhung is the coil is in the gap 90-100% and i take that back about better low end frequency response i think the benefit was more sensitive less xmax more power/coil in the gap to control the cone i also read the cost is higher to produce them over traditional overhung subs im gonna stop guessing lol There isn't really a "regular" amount of coil in the gap per-se. An SA-12 for example has a 45mm coil and 12.5mm top plate so 27% is in the physical gap (not counting fringe field) -- a Z v.3 has a 65mm coil and 30mm top plate so 46% is in the gap. SD-2 8" is under-hung 12.5mm coil and 25mm top plate -- so has 2x the top plate compared to coil height.
  10. so smaller voice coil length completely under the top plate in the magnet gap what are the benefits over the common overhung? I made a post over here about different motor designs : http://www.stevemeadedesigns.com/board/topic/82278-i-need-blbl-curve-explained/
  11. Just to give you an idea of what they are capable of -- check out results from SBN this year. Both heavy-weight bass boxing and 159.9 bass race contestants in the final round ran Z v.3 15s -- also a ton of other Z v.3s in the lanes there
  12. In your particular prototype the Z coil fits with no issue; I made a 10" prototype with a Z coil -- the production units are a bit tighter on the top plate ID so they would actually need a different coil to work without worrying about clearance (the Z coil would still fit but it would be tight). I'll have a slightly modified coil very similar to the Z coil for X series "SPL" re-cones down the line; originally I intended to them to interchange but the X gap worked better a bit tighter with production coils. So once all the parts are in stock, yes, you could do that.
  13. To answer your question; yes you are wrong about your assumptions. The v.3 delivers more of what most customers want from their woofers than the v.2 -- otherwise we wouldn't have made it. Any specific questions ? Every part is different except for the frames and gaskets between the two.
  14. Thread updated with new platform products. It is also now closed to new replies ; please make a new thread or e-mail us for a re-cone question.
  15. My PMs are all disabled on here; but our box looked almost identical to yours but with a side firing 6" aero-port. About the same volume as well. http://www.stevemeadedesigns.com/board/topic/140161-3x-sa-8-v2-in-jakes-vw-golf/ At a later date we put a 3500D v.2 on them ; then also tried E8 v.3 in there.
  16. They will NOT do well sealed. You will need a good bit of break-in time on them; the Fs will drop over time. They use the same spider, cone, and surround as the SA-8 v1.5 but with a coil that is lighter; this results in a higher Fs. We used a single 6" aero out the side of the box for 3x SA-8 v.2 tuned to 30 Hz and it got pretty nasty ; we also tried E8 v.3 in the box and they worked well too -- obviously the SA-8 v.2 has more bottom-end but the sound from the E8s was good. If you do want a sealed box the SD-2 8" is your best bet from our line.
  17. They would be an excellent 4th order woofer. You can use the current Z v.3 box specs as a starting point ; all of the new woofers will accept larger boxes -- for example; the Z v.4 12" In-Car Video thread box is 3 cubes for one 12" woofer and we aren't hurting the speaker. We'll be doing some real-world testing to dial it in further, of course, but this is what I'd shoot for : 10s : 1.25 - 2 cubes ported 12s : 2 - 3 cubes ported 15s : 3 - 4.5 cubes ported 18s : 4 - 6 cubes ported At higher power err towards smaller; around rated power err towards bigger.
  18. Derrick has the pics and videos to upload later... but we got up to 145.5 dB @ 25 Hz today in testing @ 1970 clamped watts. We are looking forward to trying two of them on an NS-1 with upgraded electrical when production arrives... 150 @ 25-30 Hz with two 12s... maybe ?
  19. Neither of our big 8s will be sealed friendly like the 8W7 -- in a ported box I'd put them up no problem. The X-8 is, as you said, a higher powered unit -- significantly larger coil, more motor power, and more x-max than the SA-8 v.2 -- the only part in common between the two drivers is the frame (which is our tooled frame).
  20. The X mechanical limit is in the motor @ 50 mm before the coil bottoms. We have 62.5mm in the motor of the Z v.4 before coil bottom -- in our in-car video it's seeing ~50mm or so. Beyond that it get's a bit too far beyond linearity and distortion climbs; but we do still have that extra room as a cushion from damage. Neither is linear up to that point but there is pleeeeenty of room for continued travel beyond linearity (less chance of damage, additional output, etc).
