Use prime with every water change, the bacteria are very important and when you do a water change you are eliminating a ton of beneficial bacteria from your water column.

I have a sponge filter going at all times too. Love sponge filters

Me too, its amazing how much impact a sponge filter can have even on a large tank.
The aquaclear filters you're running are great too, I used them for years before making the switch to canisters.
