i believe mount st helens was estimated at 300 db not sure it was actually metered though

i doubt it, i remember being a kid when that happened and im SURE they were using the old AC mic back then...that 300db could be a 150 for all we know

i also think there is a difference between speakers producing a "sound wave" and a volcano producing a "shock wave". a speaker produces sound through repetative air mvement (htz), where as a volcano produces sound by way of explosion (shock wave). OR i may just be a complete idiot!

I am thinking along the same lines as what meade said. A 180 in a vehicle with a confined space is completely different than something being 180 in an open space free air.

i heard that somewhere before too but i think that was just for the car audio world that a subwoofer would collapse on itself from the pressure. (dont quote me on it its just what i heard)

and that 180 db is probably from the 10 mile mark. it MUST have been louder at the base of the explosion.

Anything over 194 decibels is considered a sonic boom, or a shock wave, or something like that.
