How Loud Is Loud?

I made this a topic on another forum years ago, but when it comes to bass, we look at DB in cars, like what 180.5db for that guy with the 18"? The loudest sound ever heard by human ears was The Krakatoa volcano eruption, so loud it ruptured eardrums on sailers 10 miles away from the eruption. Using scientific analysys, they came up with 180db. From 3000 miles away, you can clearly hear the explosion from as if it was down the street. at 180db, where the hell would they have metered this at? from the 10 mile mark where the sailors were? Iam just rambling on, but Iam sure some people will have some shit to add, thats why I posted this

Krakatoa (Indonesian name: Krakatau, Portuguese name: Krakatao) is a volcanic island in the Sunda Strait between Java and Sumatra in Indonesia. The name is used for the island group, the main island (also called Rakata), and the volcano as a whole. It has erupted repeatedly, massively and with disastrous consequences throughout recorded history. The best known eruption culminated in a series of massive explosions on August 26-27, 1883.

The 1883 eruption ejected more than 25 cubic kilometres of rock, ash, and pumice, and generated the loudest sound ever historically reported — the cataclysmic explosion was distinctly heard as far away as Perth in Australia (approx. 3100 km), and the island of Rodrigues near Mauritius (approx. 4800 km). Atmospheric shock waves reverberated around the world seven times and were felt for five days[citation needed]. Near Krakatoa, according to official records, 165 villages and towns were destroyed and 132 seriously damaged, at least 36,417 (official toll) people died, and many thousands were injured by the eruption, mostly in the tsunamis which followed the explosion.

The eruption destroyed two-thirds of the island of Krakatoa. New eruptions at the volcano since 1927 have built a new island, called Anak Krakatau (child of Krakatoa).

You were watching the same history channel show as me last night right? Well, I do know that 180db's isn't loud enough to be heard 3000miles away. They just threw that number out there, because that's what TV does (just throw shit out there) An atomic explosion is the loudest sound known to man ever recorded, which was around 220db's. So that Volcano must have been close to 300 Db's to deafen sailors at a distance of 10miles. The equivalent of 1million nuclear explosions... now that I can believe.

anyway i think that 180db thing could be true, who knows.....i think there is a difference in a volcano making 180db than a car burping 180 on a mic when its been engineered to do that number in one and only one spot. A lot of SPL cars do much less then that even a foot to the other side of the dash so i dont think its a good comparison. If you had thousands of subs in boxes as big as buildings and as many of them as it takes to use up the shear size of a volcano......and they were ALL doing 180 at the same time in open air, i bet it would be much more realistic then the pioneer truck opening the door at a show....if you feel what im TRYING to say (trying anyway)

Yeah, but just remember no one knows for certain because no one could have measured the SPL back then, or been close enough to get a reading & survive. Probably within that range though.
