Is this a good trade?

Recommended Posts

My buddy just asked me to trade his Memphis PR 12's (SVC 4ohm), in a newly built ported box, for my 15" L5 (DVC 2ohm) in a cheap ebay box.

Just wondering if this is close to an even trade money/audio wise. I have a '97 Grand Prix, and even in the cheap box i have, the l5 still wont fit under my 6x9 w/o pushing them up. I have it close to the trunk now, which sounds better, but i don't have much trunk room.

Also, my amp is Kicker zx750.1, can the Memphis PR's handle it as the L5 does?

Thanks

I like Memphis but those two 12's are only 500RMS while the 15" L5 is 750 (perfect for the amplifier) not to mention i've seen 12" L5's take 1000RMS daily. I've also owned a Grand Prix 97 and they have huge trunks you need to build a new box. I would keep the 15" and build a box subwoofer and port to the rear. (I ran two 15's in my grand prix you can do 1 15" easy) I'd suggest running RMS off the amplifier (probably around 1000) to the subwoofer (if your electrical can handle it, which stock electrical can probably do 1000rms)

Build a box 35hz @ 3.5cft net ported and fire them both to the rear should be a lot louder.

Thanks for the quick reply. Actually, the previous owner had 2 of these 15" L5's, but and had the box from the back of the seat, all the way back to the trunk.

The thing is, I drive 90 miles a day for work, and I would like to have access to the spare tire. So a big box really isn't an option for me, as i would like it to be.

Anyone have experience with both subs? Big difference in how they hit?

Hold the hell on now, did you see a DMM on the amp showing the power coming out of the amp? because im pretty sure there is NOOOOOO way the chinese coils can handle 1krms DAILY.

oh, also its a good trade, square subs are terrible in all honesty >.>

and man, that amp should be perfect as long as the box that the Memphis's are in has enough port area. I did a PR 15 in a scion XB and it sounded pretty nice, you'll be happy with the 12"s if you trade.

im taking out my passenger seat, battery is disconnected, going to unwire and take out the three amps, take out the 70+ lb box, then the platform so i can crimp 1 wire.

My friend was running two 12" L5's @ 2ohm off an Alpine MRP-2000.1 with the gain all the way up (he didn't care kid makes 3000 a month for free) they didnt kick off or smell after about 5 good minutes, I was as surprised as you are my friend. and theres nothing wrong with square subs, they sound terrible but they do put out a worthy punch. Don't go with the memphis it'd be a big mestake, if you can't do a big box than 2 12's and a single 15 are probably not up your alley. I'd opt for a good single 12 or two 10's and build a small box. tbh 3-3.5cft isn't that big in a grand prix you could MAYBE get to your spare tire depending how the box's dimensions are.

If your friend had his whole trunk taken up by those two L5's he made the box bigger to compensate for power loss... I ran two 15 comps @ 3cft each and still had massive room in my grand prix,it was sealed though but I'd imagine a port single 15" should be fine. I could design you a box but im not gonna bother until you decide.

I would stay with the kicker, just build it a proper box.

Any time you have have a power wire next to your frame put some rubber hosing (or cut up an innertube) around it. The wire is bound to wiggle (due to driving or flex) and the casing will eventually wear through.
