cheese20323 Posted March 21, 2011 Report Posted March 21, 2011 Clipping is not bad....if you have a 1500 watt sine wave and 1500 watt square wave(clipped) and a DC XL 1500rms, and if the coil is heating up and subs are blowin off of the same power then obviously Dc has some changing to do....1 watt clipped or clean is still 1 watt. 92 Accord Build
Superjay Posted March 21, 2011 Report Posted March 21, 2011 wrong...inside that clipped wave (the flat part) is 127% the power of the equivalent sine wave...plus, a clipped wave holds the voice coil in a stopped position briefly so it reduces cooling ability Principal JTech Consulting - Leader in 12-Volt Training and Product PlanningIt's not about how much power you have, but how well you use it

If you have a 1500 rms woofer shouldnt it take 1500 rms all day everyday? 92 Accord Build
Superjay Posted March 21, 2011 Report Posted March 21, 2011 no. it dissipates 1500 watts when moving. during a clipped signal wave the piston stops twice during each cycle, thus increasing heat by as much as 400%. Clipping is sending a DC signal to your subs effectively stoping them from moving (which means no or less cooling). If you soft clip you won't see the effect much at all and no big deal. However any sub no matter the power handling will not cool if it isn't moving. 1500 watt square wave will heat any coil up very quickly if it isn't moving. edit: Jay is on it, sorry I didn't see your post. DC is direct current smart one. Like current coming from a battery. An amp is AC...clipped or not clipped. so the sub is moving with a clipped signal just not the coil? haha 92 Accord Build
Superjay Posted March 21, 2011 Report Posted March 21, 2011 ok genius...now it's time for me to be an asshole...a clipped signal is an alternating direct current signal. it goes from positive DC to negative DC...you are sending DC to your sub when you send a clipped signal. WHY THE FUCK DO I HAVE TO DO THIS 3 TIMES A WEEK??? Principal JTech Consulting - Leader in 12-Volt Training and Product PlanningIt's not about how much power you have, but how well you use it

Like why is it possible you can hook up a sub to a wall socket? because it is AC... 92 Accord Build

I mis-typed and should have read that clipping (full clipping) is the same as sending DC to your subs, it keeps them from moving. Put a battery to your sub, it moves one way and stops. Not sure what you are asking about saying the coil is moving but not the sub. Superjay Posted March 21, 2011 Report Posted March 21, 2011 I guess all my engineering professors were wrong and you're right. i'll go rewrite ALL the fucking textbooks on this subject. direct current that alternates is still direct current, but it alternates from positive to negative on cycle. it's an alternating current that contains direct current. yes, it alternates...between positive dc and negative dc. depending on the slope of the wave that transient can be instantaneous...or a perfect square wave. because there are stops at the top and bottom without smooth transition there is no time to cool the coil...power handling is reduced to next to nothing. we can do this all night, but you'll just end up with your feelings hurt Principal JTech Consulting - Leader in 12-Volt Training and Product PlanningIt's not about how much power you have, but how well you use it
