RE SExxx 15's...will they make it hurt?

Recommended Posts

1st off...Nice Forum!

'New' to car audio-no. 'Re-new' to car audio-yes.

It's been along time since my last system build, so I'm not up to speed with todays equip per se. I've been doing alot of reading, now I need some up to date insight, opinionated and objective both. I thank you in advance for considering my inquiries. And please punch holes in my idea if I'm going the wrong direction with what I'm looking for.

In short;

Will (2) 15" Re SeXXX subs, in an 8 cubic feet (before displacement) enclosure ported to 32 hz, make it hurt?? I understand that different amps will yield different results, but can these subs do the job?? I will likely be using Zapco for the juice...maybe C2K 9.0

Back in 95/96 I fell in love with the 10w6 (x3), it literally shook parts off my sentra. Now I wanna go big.

**Almost forgot...are they worth $350 for 2, or $500 for 2 and enclosure?**

(I have a couple pictures, but can't figure out how to upload them)

some cars do over 170db with one sub, so clearly my two 12"s can do that in my car, with my knowledge too! look out bitches!

Based on that response I went ahead and met with the seller for a demo. Started off nice enough, couple of intro thumps in the song...then the 1st bass drop hit...my vision went all funny, teeth chattered, I bit my neck, and my spine did the wave. I was yelling 'SOLD!' before the drop was even finished.

They are 15" SE's re-coned with the Tres Equis. I am the 2nd owner, as the seller aquired them direct from Craig at RE. I had to pass on the enclosure however, it simply wouldn't fit in my car to get it home. It was nice, with etched RE mirror plate and gray suede carpeting, but it was made of 1" plywood. Are they not supposed to be made of MDF or HDF?? I asked of the specs and he told me Craig said they work best with 3 cubes each (8 cubes before driver and port displacement). That seems awfully much to me. Anyone have better data on that? Although it sounded, and felt, great at the stated 32hz tuning, it wasn't rolling off as tight as I was expecting. Do I need it tuned to a signifigantly lower freq? Whats the cutoff?

Magnificent subs, hands down.

Thank you again for your input. Without which, I likely would have passed on them.

the tuning for the box can depend on many variables. i've heard the rule of thumb for enclosure size is - if you're overpowering the subs go with the smaller end of the manufacturers recommended enclosure size, and if you're under powering them go with the larger end.

check out torres box tuning calculator, which is located somewhere on this forum.

another variable is the size of your car. if you have a small car, like a hatchback, you might want to tune it lower. the reason being (i'm assuming) is because you are closer to your subs. this usually sounds louder, so you can tune your box lower still be loud. also, as you probably know, lower tuning means better SQ (usually). it's also easier to hear imperfections in the acoustics the closer you are, so better SQ is likely a must. just the opposite applies if you are further away (sometimes).

hope that helps
