Guest MegaloManiac Posted October 7, 2007 Report Posted October 7, 2007 its quite possible to have a damaged coil instead of a totally ruined one, if you put not enough power to a sub it can cause the voice coil to get hot quicker ( like putting a geo engine in a suburban, underpowerering a sub is making the coil work harder to move the cone) and therfore may cause the coil to get hot and damage it! Typically when you overpower a sub, its being pushed beyond its excursion limits and therefore blowing the face off or some other damage. what the hell are you talking about ?

But your probably right, I really dont have a clue what Im talking about.......... lol roscoe.....but hes right you fried a coil....i seen it coming, those are cheapo subs. not puttin you down or anything but quality is better than quantity sometimes. i was thinking leave the 12 sitting in the box in the hole and duck tape from the bottom of the sub to the bottom of the baffle so the sub doesnt free air. would that work?

I have an amp 4 ten's the whole works, which most people don't have. Imma get another sub to fix the one that messed up and wait until a get my Audiobahn amp so I can give them some power so they aren't under powered. Ya Digg lol....save up like I did....and you will have a loud ass system as mine for a 16 year old

It makes the coil (motor) work harder to perform the same as if getting the proper amount of power. Sure, if you underpower a sub and turn the gains all the way up to sustitute the real power it will damage it as well by sending a clipped or dirty signal. But just underpowering can cause damage as well. I seen it first hand with my XXX's it was a clean signal not clipped just underpowered and it still caused the coil to overheat and come unglued. But once again I obviously know nada, zip, zero in this matter. Guest MegaloManiac Posted October 7, 2007 Report Posted October 7, 2007 i beg to differ roscoe. usually when they engineer good quality subs they take that into consideration. nobody listens to there music on full tilt for long period of time so im sure they will try to get the best of it. but it doesnt make sence that it would get real hot from under powering it, its within thermal limits & not clipping...not in this case though lol

Not only due to clipping, but the coil not being able to perform up to snuff. Go buy a viper, change the oil to dollar store oil, and run it on 87 octane. Lemme know how well she runs after a mth or two. Same principal here. WBA, listen kid. Audio is like Poker or any other gamble. Do your homework, study up on how to do it, and always remember you gotta pay to play. (with FEW exceptions) Those visoniks are about as shitty as Road gear, Roadmaster, or anything else you might find at wally world. Have I done small shit audio systems where I severly underpowered some shit subs? Yea to test durability under in-experienced hands for shits and giggles. Save the $$$ buy a good H/U, then comps with a good well made reputable amp. Then when you have more $$ for a set of WELL MADE QUALITY SUBS, get them and then do the same with an amp for the sub. Get Some nice 2 awg or even if ur going small 4 awg wire. Hook it up PROPERLY, do the big three and bump till your ears bleed. Until you can FULLY comprehend these concepts and not whine like a little bitch beacuse people are busting ur balls, keep the fuck away from here. We don't mind helping when you actually take the advice given to you.
