Android Tablet Suggestions?

Recommended Posts

I've been looking into getting an Android Tablet soon, and I am looking for suggestions.

Only criteria:

Needs to be rootable.

Preferably comes with Honeycomb, or have Honeycomb roms available.

Under $300.

Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks.

ehh..$300? Do you want it new or used? What about a contract with a carrier for 3G? ...and what would it be used for?

The absolute cheapest tablet I'd buy.

That said, save your money and get a Xoom or the upcoming Galaxy Tab 10.1.

Those cheap tablets really aren't worth the money if you're buying new.

You may be offended by the above. Don't take it personally, I'm just abrasive.

I had been looking into the Galaxy Tab, but I've determined I want a bigger screen. And the 10.1 has supposedly been put on the back burner and won't be out for a while.

I've been looking at the Viewsonic G Tablet. My girlfriend's dad has one, and loves it. But I haven't really heard anything else about it, and it doesn't currently run Honeycomb, though there are rumors of it being ported to the G Tab.

As for carrier/3G, I want a purely WiFi device, I'll be tethering to my phone for internet. Don't need another monthly bill for no reason.

Alright, the gTab came in yesterday, and I've already installed a custom ROM and everything on it. The stock ROM just wasn't cutting it for me.

Right now, I have a Honeycomb port running on it, and I absolutely LOVE it. The only problem with this ROM is no camera, no support for HD video, and other small things.

The STOCK ROM and some other custom ROMs DO support these things, but I absolutely love LOVE Honeycomb.

Anyway, I love it. I use it for Gmail, Web Browsing, and Music. I also just installed Aldiko (an eReader app) and it's great for that as well.

My only complaints about the device itself are it's a little on the heavy side, compared to other tablets of similar size (Xoom, iPad, etc) and the screen isn't quite as responsive as others, but it isn't bad.

I looked into the GTab and several others but after playing with the Samsung Tab I got it. The screen is awesome on the Samsung, the color looked all washed out on the others to me. The only thing I'm not impressed with is the ram, it needs more. I run task killer and set it to kill all apps when the screen is shut off, otherwise it will slow way down. I just picked up a Google G2X phone and love it so I'm going to check out the new LG tablet here soon, might upgrade if its as nice as my phone is.

Just saying, Task Killers will use just as much memory, if not more, than just leaving the apps runnning.

My only complaint with the Galaxy Tab was the size. I know they have a 10" version coming out soon, but I didn't feel like waiting. Plus, I don't think have a Honeycomb ROM for it yet.

thanks for your review of it. nothing there seems too much for me to wanna not buy the tablet. i'm going to use it for music and video, so anything else is no bother to me. i might try to hook up some other screens to it (if possible, if not oh well) but that'll be about it. yay
