pvg Posted June 15, 2011 Report Posted June 15, 2011 Hello, First off all a introduction, the name is Philippe, the age is 21 and i'm from Holland a.k.a the Netherlands. The first introduction to bass was on Youtube by Steve and his Tahoe, next i also followed the build of EXO. After a nice Bass demo at school i thought i want more bass in my car. (VW Polo with 15 inch Kicker sub and Highfonics amp.) I can't buy expensive 18 inch subs and 4k amps, because i'm a student. My goal is to have a nice ride with good music in it, no speed is not important for me. The car Its a red metallic Nissan Micra from 1999, not many room in the trunk but just enough for a amp and subwoofer. Already other door-speakers and 2 tweeters in the back. With 700 kilo's its a heavy weight! The parts Subwoofer: Soundstream PW-12S 12'' Subwoofer Max power: 700 Watt RMS power: 350 Watt Amplifier: Still looking for a good amp for a nice price here in Holland. For the box i choose to make it myself. I start this build log with "The making of " The dimensions was very hard for me, because every How To was in inches and every Subwooferbox calculator is in inch and feet. (Warning this is a build with the measurements in centimeter!!!) The size of the box is around 43 by 40 by 80CM What did i need. The wood: 15mm multiplex 4 times 40 cm by 80 cm planks 4 times 40 cm by 40 cm planks Others: 1 tube of woodglue 100 screws 1 Litre of grey paint ( base coat 3 layers) Sanding paper 180grid The wood I didn't cut myself, the local wood-shop did it. They can saw every time perfect within 0.5 mm difference. The first Corner First a line to pre-drill the wood (if you don't pre-drill you can crack the wood). Then a layer of glue and screw it down. Then 2 other wooden planks to make the box more stable. The port I didn't calculate the port size. I did it by ques, the port is 8cm by 40cm. Some more pre-drilling and glue and the port is in place. A can of drink 0.5 litres and a pack of cigarettes for the size. The top Then the top can be fitted. With some glue and screws is it held in place. A bit of paint I painted the difficult places and the port because i cant reach it when it is closed. Closed Box Then cut the last part myself to make it fit. This piece is not glued and screwed, first i need to cut a circle for the subwoofer itself and the powercables. Hiding the screws, turn the screws in the wood. Then with liquid wood cover up the wholes. Then sanding it smooooth. Before. After The first layer of paint I want the box to be shiny black. But first the base coat a grey paint, after a couple layers the black paint is going to be applied. The next time Tomorrow a package! Find out next time. Cutting the circle for the Soundstream and test fit the box. More sanding !!!!!!! (Sorry for the crappy pictures, i took then with my phone.) Please let me know what you think! The port was a bit random size, for a first box and no intensions to enter a DB drag. When its installed and im not satisfied i can always modify the box. pvg Posted June 16, 2011 Author Report Posted June 16, 2011 The package Sorry for the advertisement, a little guess where i bought it. When its open. The subwoofer and wire (4mm²) 2 meters. The subwoofer up side down. Aaaah i love the design. Cutting the hole I was a bit nervous about cutting the hole. But a nice template comes with the subwoofer. The cutting line, where the screwholes need to be and the outline of the subwoofer. A huge +. No slipping and sliding, its got a sticky side to it. The first hole, no going back now. Sanding the edges.(A friend helped me so i can make picture.) Mounting the plate in the box. Test fitting the sub. (A friend helped me so i can make picture.) A quick look. Now to smooth down the front of the box. First with woodglue filling out the cracks (of the wood ofcourse, dont think nasty!).Then filling the edge with liquid wood. The wires. Because its a temporary solution, i put a connector between the cables. Now its time to put it in the box and true the port. When the wood dries its sanding time again. Then fit the subwoofer and give it a test. Maybe give the box a bit extra paint. To be continued !!! Greetz PVG :nice: I like Pugs When will it be done,, maybe never.

Some questions: Why did you use wood instead of MDF? (easier to work with amnd much cheaper) Did you calculate the box and port design? Or did you just build a box that looked nice? pvg Posted June 17, 2011 Author Report Posted June 17, 2011 @6berry , The dimensions are 40cm high , 43 cm deep and 80 cm wide. And the port if 8cm by 40 cm. This is a testfit if everything works. The corners im going round them like you said. I only want to know the materials i need to use, like wooden strips or liquid wood or something else. @ general, I didn't calculate the port, but i already said it in the buildlog. I used this material because i got it a bit cheaper and easier to work with (it think). And it fits my trunk good. Maybe later a bigger sub or 2 times 12 inch. I tested the subwoofer un amplified, 45 watt from my radio to test if i heard some metal. It already sounds good and maybe a bass video soon. I like Pugs When will it be done,, maybe never.
pvg Posted June 18, 2011 Author Report Posted June 18, 2011 A quick update. The test fit ! A few nice pictures close up. The box installed. The box isnt fully painted becasue i first want to do some testing on 45 watt from the car radio. I tested it with a el cheapo amplifier but it didnt sound great . Next time maybe some video's. Need to fiks some good camera. And ofcourse some more layers of paint. I like Pugs When will it be done,, maybe never.
