reman. motor or re build what i have

I might get this truck from my boss for $800 but it has a spun barring. If I get the truck should I get the stock reman motor or re build the one in the truck now.

If I use the motor in the truck now I would used forged rods and pistons, intake manifold, cam and head work. For the most part im not going to drive it that much just use it more for towing and weekend 4 wheeling.

What do u guys think I should do?

If you rebuild it, make sure you rebuild it for torque. Since you will need it in 4 wheeling and towing.

honestly if budget is a main concern. you dont have to rebuild the engine. you could just replace the rod bearings themselves. hell when i had my s-10 like a week before i was going to sell it i spun a rod bearing. i didnt want to put a whole lot of money into it, so i dropped the oil pan off, and replaced the rod bearings with the engine still in the truck. it was kind of a bitch to do, but it only cost me around 90 bucks.

now if this truck was driven for a while with a spun bearing, more than likely there will be some damage to the crankshaft, could be scored, could be out-of-round, could be both.

if it were me doing this, i would buy a re-man and slap it in, then rebuild the old motor up nicely, swap em, and sell the factory motor.

how about this idea, get the new motor as well, and rebuild the old one as a project so you can have some insane shit done to it over time, and eventually drop it in..

kills 2 birds with 1 stone kinda thing.. you can still drive it, and then you can rebuild the engine

Its 4.7 4x4 auto. The motor sucks and have alot of problems with over heating and the oil cooking on top of the motor(poor design). The truck has 89,000 miles on it and it has a body lift and 33's.

The truck will sit till tax time, the junk yards around me want $2400 for the motor with no warranty because of the history with the 4.7s.

is it a dodge? If your looking for towing and 4 wheeling swap to the 318 (if its the dodge). 318s are cheap, reliable, and nearly bulletproof. Not the most poweful engine but it will get the job done affordably.

is it a dodge? If your looking for towing and 4 wheeling swap to the 318 (if its the dodge). 318s are cheap, reliable, and nearly bulletproof. Not the most poweful engine but it will get the job done affordably.

X2, That's what I was thinking. I got a 97 Dakota with the 5.2L 318 and a 97 Ram with the 5.9L 360 both are extremely reliable and have plenty of power. Honestly, I'd stay away from any 4.7L I've heard many people who have had major engine issues. Also not sure if your aware of the notorious Dodge Automatic Transmission issues.
