jrot Posted July 28, 2011 Report Posted July 28, 2011 i was playing around with my kenwood head unit today that has quite a bit of x-over and eq options, well i don't have much experience with this and so i just play with it till i like how it sounds but would like to understand more about how it works and what it does and what it is. for example on my front speakers i have the option to set them to through 20, 30, 40hrz ect ect, then i can set the slope to 6, 12, 24, 48db (i think) i can do this front rear and sub all separate of the EQ settings. so what does this do and how does the x-over effect the EQ ect? i hope this isn't a super noob question but i was just curious how it all works in simplest terms possible.
kickass audio Posted July 28, 2011 Report Posted July 28, 2011 The slope works kinda like a cliff to make it easy. Lets say you are at the end of a hill and it is set to 80Hz. If you set it to a 2db crossover slope, it will be a very small and extended (further out) drop. Now if you set it at 80Hz but used the 48db slope, the end of the hill will drop off instantly and continue to be straight down the further out you go. Now in real terms.. If you set your headunit to 80Hz at a 2db slope, that means you are only lowering frequencies above (highpass) or lower (lowpass) than your frequency setting a very minimal amount. This isnt really a good thing because you are basically sending a tone through the speaker you do NOT want. Like for example if it was a tweeter and you set it at 3000Hz (3KHz) at a 2db slope and at highpass, a very good chunk of frequencies below that 3KHz setting will STILL play. This is very bad as you will blow that tweeter faster than you can think about it. Now if you did the same settings but at a 48db slope, as soon as music that is lower than 3KHz plays, it will be almost completely killed out and not get to the tweeter. I have my settings on my 3sixty.2 set at a 24db slope, i think 48 is quite overkill but i would do it for my tweeters if i could. And just so you are aware, just because you set the headunits crossover at a certain frequency and slope DOESNT mean that you will no longer get those frequencies. Absolutely NO crossover, whether its passive or active will EVER kill ALL the frequencies you cut off. There will always be a slight trace of it that bleeds through the speakers. Now how much of it that bleeds through is dependent on your slope setting. Another good way to look at it is to think of the slope like a garden hose. If you set the hose wide open and the water is flowing out, there is no restriction on the flow of water. Now lets say you give it 2db of a crossover point, it will slightly restrict the flow of water, the higher db you apply to the hose, the less flow of water you will get out of that hose but you cannot completely stop the water from coming out. Idk about for my SMD since its not installed for probably another week (i work too damn much). I am overpowering the mids and highs by almost another 100 watts from the rating Rockford Fosgate gives them and they sound perfect and dont get hot or anything. As long as you set everything up right it wont cause any problem. I have bleed through on my highs because i can slightly hear vocals on the tweeters but its faint when you do hear it so it doesnt bother me.
