*Type of wood used for box*

Recommended Posts

Well, the reason they're both great for enclosures is that they DON'T resonate (a lot) in the passband of normal subwoofer output. I like birch because it's light but it's more delicate to work with (splinters) than MDF. MDF on the other hand machines more consistently so sawing and using a router on edges is easier IMO.

Also, MDF does not absorb water very easily. I think the other poster was thinking of particle board, which should not be used for sub enclosures, because particleboard DOES absorb water easlily and that it splits when drilled or screwed on the spine.

at Lowe Depot, birch is $10-15 more than MDF, but I found lumber yards that specialize in hardwoods seem to carry birch and it's about $35 a sheet. It's worth a glance in the Yellow Pages.

Rebuild. Less quiet. Still not loud.

With sound you actully want the panels to be heavier. Its a way to dampen the box. People are saying ply is stiffer. Well it is but it isnt if that makes sence.. Long storie short, birtch resonates more then mdf does. Mdf is better imo

Fiberglass and resin the inside then.

ive wondered this also, what difference does the resin make ? i am wanting to do this, but their is no point for me to right now, becuase i dont have the basic concept of what it will do lol

Thats not going to change the dampening of it all that much. Will make it stronger and more ridged yes. But what mdf does it adds mass to the panel itself which is what you want.

People claim the resin makes it stronger. I use resin in my screwless design that only use liquid nails. It adds strength and rigidity supposedly.

Its cheap, and some people claim it can gain a .5-1 db gain in SPL designs.

It has been done. Even Steve himself recently said he uses it because it gives the box more strength. Not because it massively increases the DBEEEZ :clapping::drink40:

Resin alone does not add much strength to an enclosure. Resin+glass mat, however, does :)

Bassless once again. Can't seem to keep a system for more than a few weeks :)

Saving for a '06 Nissan 350z, look for build around June 2012.

You are only going to use the resin. If you wear gloves and take your time, and mix things right its not bad at all.

Never thought about saving weight with a less dense wood. If at some point I do a rebuild, I think I will try Birch or Oak to try to save some gas/acceleration.
