Sub positioning ?'s

Okay, first off, take a quick glance at my current box. It holds two 12"s (I know it doesn't look like it, because of the camera angle, but trust me )

So, here's the scoop:

My new box, which will hold two 15"s, is almost the exact same shape.... Only its about 6" taller, 6" wider, and 6" deeper.

Well, what this means, is that the face of the box will be pretty darn close to the back of my seat.

So my first question is, how far from the back of my seat should the speakers sit ? ....or should I say, how much clearence do they need, so as not to impair the air they are moving ???

Second question is, SQ / SPL wise, would it make any difference if the subs faced straight up at the roof ? I had really not considered this until just this evening, as the 12"s in my old box faced forward, and they always did really well..... but then they had lots of clearence between the box and the seat, that my 15"s won't....

I think they would fit in the top.... but it might be a squeeze to get two 15"s, AND three, 6" diameter ports, all into an area of 32" x 21"..... {and yes, the ports have to be on the top, to go along with another part of my plan}

I will appreciate your opinions on this...

PS, I built a cardboard mock-up tonight, and holy $#!@ ! This is one FAT box ! About 10 cubic feet gross. My biggest ever. But I was thinking this morning, that their will never be a bigger "box" per say, in this truck, than this, as the next time, it will just have to be walled

you pretty much have to test and test but im pretty sure ive seen a few people with pickup trucks with sub up port side and they did well but it varies between every vehicle and the only way to find out is by testing.

I hear subs forward and port(s) up does best numbers in an extended cab, but subs up and ports up still does good. I had subs up and port up with my 18's in my extended cab. Worked quite well. Best "quality" is a downfire box most people say.

I've seen vids of subs forward and port forward doing well, but they were very large setups.

Like I say, my ports have to be up.

And it sounds like, ports forward might be the best choice....

But again, about the clearence issue ???

I'm wondering how close they could be to my seat, without having airflow problems ? 1 1/2" ? 2" ? Hey, at least my seats are breathable fabric, and not leather, or vinyl. I think that my be even worse.

I'm going to put the cardboard mock-up in there tonight, and see for sure what I have to work with.
