Can a h/o amp run off an underdrive pulley?

Recommended Posts

Im not a big guy on knowledge about this kind of stuff but ill suggest this to you OP. Keep the new alt with the smaller pulley it comes with when you purchase it, and if anything get a underdrive pulley for your power steering and maybe the water pump. I dont know how small you can go before you have the chance of ruining your steering or water pumps flow so id ask some good pros on here about that but thats where id start. I wouldnt make the pulley on a h/o alt bigger since you are pretty much wasting your money on getting something high powered and restricting its output. Think of it like buying a race car but putting a very low end limiter on the engine, whats the point? lol.

You can run an overdrive pulley with your underdrive crank pulley. We do not recommend running underdrive crank pulleys with high output alternators for 2 reasons, one is the reduction of rotor speed, the other is belt traction.

Reducing the diameter of the pulley on the crank or the alternator will reduce the available contact area for the belt and can result in slip. Many of our units already come with a small diameter pulley to keep the rotor speed within our recommended range. This is the case with most aftermarket alternators, the pulley will be sized according to their specs and the performance rating of the unit. Due to the design of the alternator you may not be able to go smaller in diameter and will not have the performance you would like out of your alternator.

So you have to decide, a couple HP from the underdrive or good performance from your charging system.
