VW Lupo - Sold it to the DD distributor - now a democar! 2x18" ++

Long time since update, a very big change to the system has happened :)

The huge box in the back is out, I needed all the space I could get since this now is my work car ( I run my own graphics/signmaking business and often go to location to mount car graphics, signs etc. Need space for my work gear.

Focusing on using least amount of space and still have some nice sounds. Using some higher class amps (Mosconi A-class and Mosconi AS200.4) and a pair of 8s in the wheel well was the original idea. I picked up 2 new DD508s since I really liked my old 1508s, and was curious about how these lower grade subs compared. First I made a MDF box, but to get the right volume it raised about 3" over the amp rack/false floor.

Sounded OK, but I wanted a less protruding box, so I went ahead and made one from fiberglass to really use all the space in the wheel well:

But when I installed the twin DD508s in the box, one sounded very sick:

The distributor gave me the go ahead to open it up (to verify that it was not blown or misused), and it looked totally fine, not blown or deformed (from overexursion/hitting the end plate)

So they gave me a full refund. I told them that instead of sending a new 508, they could subtract its value from a 2508 and send one of those. I even got to choose the serial # from the ones in stock, so #100 is on the way now :) Regular 2508 with dial 2 ohm VC. Will sell my other 508 to a buddy, and modify the box to be upfiring (firing back now) and make a large enough slotport so I wont get port noise.

Some newer shots of the car itself, wrapping all done and summer wheels on :)

Nice work on that Lupo. I like the military green vynil !

It's a pitty you could not use the btl no more. How did you like it ?

And your new system ?

You did not told us what you think of your front stage. And now with the Mosconi : big difference ? Way better quality amps than those Sony's !

black BMW X1 2.0 l 192 hp

OEM head unit, Amplifiers Audison AP 8.9 amp with integrated DSP and Ampere Audio 1200.

Focal ES 100 K in front doors, and Dayton RS 180 for midbass under the front seats.

2 SSA DEMONS 10" subs, in a 2.6 ft3  ported box. SecondSkin Damplifier on front doors, and Luxury Liner Pro for the cargo area.

This came in the mail today :)

I really like the front stage, even though the TB fullranges can get really loud (like REALLY loud for what they are) they always sound smooth and kind of laid back, never harsh or tinny. With them being 8ohm drivers, they rarely see anything more than 50W from the Mosconi A-class amp, but the output is just amazing. I took a chance on these, never heard them before I got them. They roll off a bit on the very top, but that suit my preferences anyway. They DO need extensive equalizing for a smooth response curve though, no problem with the 1/3 octave eq in my headunit, but without eq-ing they sound just awful :P Muddled and boomy, like listening to music through a telephone :P

So I got the all new DD 2508 8-inch subwoofer, (1st one sold in Norway, the distributor is awaiting feedback), and yesterday I started modifying my fiberglass box to accomodate it.

First of all, a few comparison pics between the 508 and 2508:

My fiberglass box in the wheel well was a bit large for a single DD8 at almost 40 litres internal. I also needed to make a slotport with enough area so that port noise would not be an issue. I went for a port that has a 5x20cm opening, or about 30% larger port area than a 4" round port. I only had 18mm mdf available to build it from so it would take up quite a bit of space from the box, but that is also what I wanted. Length is about 60cm in total (L-shaped port), for a displacement of about 10 liters. Add a couple of liters for the driver and the net internal volume is just about 1^ft (28L). Good starting point for a DD8 from experience.

Port finished with rounded over ends. Added a plate to the other side of the L to fasten the whole port to the baffle, and also brace the baffle in the same process.

Marked up the port placement and opening on both sides of the baffle before fastening the port:

I have made the opening on the baffle, rounded the opening with a router and primed the port. Then sanded it down with 80-120-240 grit, primed again, black base coat and clearcoat. Waiting for it to dry now to sand it with 600grit and clearcoating again. Should be smooth and nice when finished.

Pic before last sanding and buffing:
