The "Scrap Wood Sixth Order"

Autruche

Recommended Posts

I've never built a sixth order bandpass and have no experience with them, so I figured the best way to learn would be through experience. I just picked up a brand new circular saw and have had the itch to start building boxes. I didn't have much wood laying around so I just used up what was laying around (Brich ply, MDF, and, yes, Particleboard) as it's just an experimental box anyway. Anywho... Here's what followed.

Did up a design: 3 cubes rear, 4 cubes front, 33 sq in @25Hz for the LF port, 144 sq in @65Hz for the HF port

Onto the build

Started with the pieces cut out

IMG_0669.jpg

For the sides and back I had to use 1/2 particle board cuz it's all that I had laying around. So I doubled it up with glue and screws.

Then I had to trim off the exess screws sticking through the other side.

Much better

Then I cut out the sub hole in the baffle.

IMG_0680.jpg

Then I cut out and assembled the HF port

IMG_0675.jpg

And then the front piece for the box

IMG_0677.jpg

IMG_0728.jpg

Here's how the HF port and the Front go together

IMG_0679.jpg

Then I cleaned up the HF port with the flush-cut and round-over bits in the router.

IMG_0691.jpg

Then I put together the LF port. I was worried that with such small port area for the LF port that port noise would be an issue, so I decided flared openings would be the best bet. I first tried to kerf MDF but that didn't work for me, it just became brittle no matter what I did so I just used cardboard tubes for the flares.

IMG_0687.jpg

IMG_0690.jpg

Then I mapped out the layout on the bottom piece.

IMG_0698.jpg

Then I pre-drilled everything and glued and screwed it all up.

IMG_0705.jpg

Had to bust out the corner clamps for the sides. If you don't have some, get some. They are like having 4 more hands.

IMG_0708.jpg

Got that all taken care of

Then I went to dry fit the top piece and ran into this issue. That should be at exactly 15

IMG_0715.jpg

Solution?

IMG_0716.jpg

IMG_0721.jpg

Much better!

IMG_0722.jpg

I then dry0fitted the face of the box on to keep everything strait while I took the top of to glue it up.

And this is why I don't buy cheap shit. No matter what you can't get this POS to not eat up belts.

IMG_0732.jpg

Then it came time to glue and screw the face on.

IMG_0733.jpg

IMG_0734.jpg

Added some speaker terminals

IMG_0740.jpg

Before round-over:

IMG_0737.jpg

After:

IMG_0738.jpg

Down the HF port

IMG_0741.jpg

The Baffle

IMG_0742.jpg

The LF port opening

IMG_0748.jpg

Down the LF port

IMG_0753.jpg

And that's all I got. I still have to drill out the mounting holes for the sub, but I let a friend borrow my MT so I have to wait for him to stop over again for that. Hopefully it sounds as good as it looks, going to be testing it out today with a 15 sitting in my house.

Looks good. I don't know how long those cardboard pieces will last though. Good practice for the real build.

This looks great man! I've had the itch to try a 4th or 6th experiment for a while. Seeing this much go into just testing make me want to try it more. Be sure to post some texting results. Good work. :good:
