audiofanaticz Posted December 25, 2011 Report Posted December 25, 2011 To start you would need a stronger alternator, something in the 200-300amp range. Might as well buy the biggest you can right off the bat (even if you dont currently need that much extra power) but if you ever upgrade to a bigger stereo you will be thankful getting that bigger alt right away instead of having to buy another new one. As for brand of alternator to buy without causing a bunch of biasad opinions. DC Power Engineering / https://www.dcpowerinc.com Excessive Amperage / http://www.excessiveamperage.com Mechman / http://www.mechman.com Either one of those companies will be your BEST bet for a true output alternator. You will also want to upgrade your wiring to 0/1 gauge wires, and do the upgrade known as the "Big 3" which you can find by searching the forums under electrical/wiring section. If voltage drop is still present you need bigger/stronger batteries. Voltage drop occurs when your current battery or batteries can not handle the amount of current being drawn from them.
Sanitarium Posted December 25, 2011 Report Posted December 25, 2011 The short and sweet of it all, on a 12 volt system, to maintain 14+ volts (charging voltage of modern alternators) you need enough alternator to supply your car's normal functions (headlights, fuel pump, ignition, etc) and all of your accessories (headunit, amplifier, gay neon lights, etc) with overhead. if the alternator can't keep up, you're at the mercy of your battery bank's reserve capacity. The larger the gap between your alternator and the draw of your >everything<, the faster your >everything< will draw from your battery bank's reserve capacity.
