dont have to be next to the amp. im sure he just wants the reading from his amp. i would ground it as close to it as possible..the other wires will be fne going to your amp

It will make no difference if you hook your volt meter directly to the battery, or to the amplifier. Hell, you could even hook into the stereo's 12v supply.. As long as it's hooked to the battery, you can see your voltage. Your voltage should not be different at any point throughout your entire vehicle, because it's coming from the same source! However, there can be an exception there.. If you had crazy resistance in one of your wires the voltage could change. Not likely though. You can hook the volt meter up into the amp, but i wouldn't unless you're going to put the volt meter right next to the amp.. Also, it doesn't matter where you ground it, a ground is a ground and your amp ground would actually be perfect because you should have cleaned off the paint at the grounding point etc.

Hmmmmm I disagree voltage will be different from front battery and stereo than at amp.... I have my meter in my dash with a speaker wire ran to my back batterys that are close to my amp. Hooked up to pos neg.. I turn meter on with ign wire.. you want to see what voltage the amp is seeing.. not front battery voltage or stereo voltage... the meter has saved me subs and amps..by not letting my voltage drop to low before I turn it down

Yessir!! I have a volt meter connected in at my alt charging post, ad I have a second one at the back in that actual amp power input there's usually a decent drop between the 2... Like when I'm into it pretty hard the alt voltage reads 15+ but at the amp I'm actually seeing around 14.3-14.5v

I know that doesn't sound like much but say that's the difference from your amp seeing a true 12.1v or when your hooked up front your amp maybe seeing 11.5v or lower....
