I like the performance of this spider better overall on the woofers it is used on. It's also slightly oversized @ 8 3/8" OD -- so has more throw than our other spider packs that are a more tradition 8"

That is correct. There are a few reasons :

1) I was trying it out and it's not really a necessity.

2) It's expensive

3) It will increase the likelihood of breaking a frame as the mass is spaced farther away (like a longer lever)
