How to: Alternator installation

Recommended Posts

I think my alt is going out but I have never replaced one ever, just wondering if you guys know of a how to guide for replacing it? If any of you have ever done it on this car, is it a pretty straight forward thing or something better left to the pro's? I am mechanically inclined, just have no experience with this.

It is actually pretty straight forward. Just disconnect the battery before you do it. Should be no more than 3 bolts holding it in place. The trickiest part about doing it (for the first time) is getting the belt off, and getting your hand down into a cramped area. Not exactly sure where it is on your Monte though.

Take bolts off, remove old alt, put new alt in, replace bolts....BAM!! you're done.

BUUUUUUUUUUT depending in the car you have it might take a lot of work to get to those bolts.

In my Oldsmobile I can have an alt out and a new one on there in like 10-15min.

But in my Jag, yeeeeeah that's something I would like to never do again. Haha

Easy. Disconnect the negative battery terminal, disconnect the wiring on the alt and unbolt it. I just looked at a picture of your motor. It's that easy.

Rest In Peace mother.

Google'ing a picture it seems to be right on top towards the back of the engine bay. shouldn't be any trouble at all. Good time to do the big 3 while you have it off too if you haven't already.
