Baydestrian Posted March 15, 2012 Report Posted March 15, 2012 LOL well not gonna thread jack anymore but thanks for that tip, I can't believe I had never read that before in all the gain setting threads I have read on the interwebz. Due to the stupid "input sensitivity" screw on these JL amps not being labeled I couldn't tell if my gain was maxed out or only a qtr up AND me not thinking it thru and turning it to the right instead of left to see if it was indeed maxed out I just turned it down then put it a qtr ways up, put sub level to the max and wow it sounds a whole lot louder AND cleaner on the lows. Only put it to 28/35 still with mid and highs each at +5 since the bass overpowers them flat (off HU power). Just need to redo the wiring since its cheap CCA from the shop and I believe they didn't put the ground to bare metal. Ray, wanted to PM you but I guess I can't, wondering if you know of any good reliable shops up here in the Bay Area I would be able to go to? skittlesRgood Posted March 15, 2012 Report Posted March 15, 2012 a DMM is worthless to an everyday mans use for an amp. its only good for reading the input voltage coming from the battery. unless you're an amp repairer, that's all that its useful for. im pretty sure ive seen you post the chart on how to set gains with a DMM in the past. using the dmm is a perfectly good way to tune a gain, we all did it for years. and it will tell you your power into a nonreactive load. it wont be close to the amount of power you get to your subs but what he is saying makes sense, if he is doing this without the subs hooked up, like he sould be.
