Choices in material

So im going to be building a box for my new woofer this weekend and was pondering the idea of using 11-13 ply birch instead of mdf due to it weighing almost half of what the mdf does. Now the question I have is, am i going to notice a difference in sound using birch instead of mdf? Is it going to give me a hollowing sound or any strange effect other then using mdf? Its for a single 15, 1000rms ported and tuned to 34 hz.

if its good birch you shouldnt notice a difference in the sound

There is a chance that the box will be more prone to subtle overtones if it's birch. MDF won't resonate in the same way birch may. However, that's no reason to dismiss birch as a viable or preferable building material. The difference in sound is negligible, whereas the weight savings in tangible.

I say yes to birch.

if your that worried, give the inside of the box a coat of fiberglass

yep pretty much slap some resin and mat in the box and you should be fine i learned that earlier today plus i dont think u really would have to go that far its only 1 15" aint like you got 5k+ running through your ride

I say yes to birch.

Birch is far more stiff then MDF and as such shouldn't resonate given proper internal bracing.

FWIW I've used 1/2" birch where 3/4" MDF was used in the same prior applications.

Only downside I see is price.
