Wicks
OK, the alternator is in! Here's the old one: Here's some pics of the repaired one. SHINY copper Haven't posted many pics lately So I took some of the install process, for about the third time overall now. Factory alt popped out fairly easily. Getting the cables situated. When working on underhood connections, always use some sandpaper or something to clean off the lugs before installing. They'll get oxidized and corroded and you don't want that impeding ~300A. I use my 4.5" angle grinder with a sanding (flap) wheel to polish off the terminals. Here we go: This should be an easy process, but the big problem with E46 M3's is that there are hard cooling lines right behind the alternator. Fine for the stock unit as both mounting bolts are on the front. But Mechman fitted their unit to require a bolt in the back which screws into a spacer bracket. That rear bolt is directly inline with those cooling lines. That means that the cooling lines need to be loosened from a mounting bracket and pushed to the side which is a BITCH... Took a little effort and a couple cuss words but she went in fairly smooth, I've done this a few times so I'm getting used to it... Trim panels and airbox back in, and she's alive! Voltage is stable and its running smooth. More to come... Leo1103
Good news = repaired alternator is back. Bad news = the message didn't get to the repair techs..so no pics of the damaged stator. I also didn't get any test data with the repaired alternator. Anybody else with new or repaired Mechmans get test data (current draw)? I find it very odd that they don't provide that automatically with every shipment. I never got any test data when I initially switched my stator windings to 200A @idle / 280A @full either, which was back in 2012. Just for shits, I'll snap some pics of the repaired alternator and post them up. I noticed a copper rectifier plate which is different from what I had before. you sure it wasnt a tinned copper rectifier plate before? if that was an aluminium plate or worse, that upsets me for you.damaged stator huh? seems fishy. did they charge you for repair? Maybe it was tinned? Not sure. I just noticed the difference.Yep they charged me, it was out of warranty and the apparent reason was a random diode failure... $50 for a new rectifier plate. $50 for a new stator. $20 for shipping. Not as bad as I was expecting but not something I'm excited about fixing. Well, at least you can play again...... \ im jonsing for my own shit to be up and running..... sorry for the bad luck bro.... Me too...haven't been able to full tilt it in a while. everyones alt are going nowadays, at least your amps are okReally? HmmYep the amps are good, thankfully. Dont need any issues there... I just spent 2 days going through all 81 pages... ive always had a thing for trunk builds, looks good! cant wait to see the finished trunk! but lets be honest... is anything really finished in car audio? Thanks Man!, much appreciated.Very true!!! Never finished.... Hopefully things get rolling soon and I get it fully presentable. Soundoffs are starting up again so its time to get this thing ready. Wicks
I shall see this thing again on Saturday. It will happen. Indeed Sir, time to meter you up and get you competing.................. man that copper is BEAUTIFUL!!!!! glad its back up and running Thanks! It is, I'm digging the copper. Too bad its not visible where the alternator is mounted............. Good to see you back up and running! TRIM PANEL TIME!!!!!! It is trim panel time. Something is in the werks, stay tuned! Yea my alt decided to act a fool and ended up blowing my 5k YIKES! That sucks. Voltage regulator went out and over-voltaged your amp? From what I've seen and experienced, I don't think I'd ever go back to an internal voltage regulator. I really like my external adjustable unit. tboorn
yeah when i saw it mounted and saw that trim i was like awww that beautiful copper is all covered up. But with all that bare metal in the engine compartment i guess its reasonable... just make a plexiglass version so you can still see it haha, that would be awesome Fidelity Built to Last Team Sound Asleep 24Runner Build Log: http://www.stevemeadedesigns.com/board/topic/196657-24runner-sleeper-system-lots-of-fi-neo-dd-focal-new-video-w-juicebox-lithium/ 2 x 12" Fi BTL N2 / 2 x 12" Fi BTL N3 2 DD M3b Maxwell 2.7V 3000F Supercapacitors Pioneer DEH-80prs Focal P165 V30 components Rockford Fosgate T-400.
