Wicks
While getting my tilting amp rack closer to being finished, I realized that my fuse panel wasn't quite fitting right. There was a comment about making it out of plastic/acrylic to help with the insulation since wood is susceptible to moisture. I ordered some 1/4" thick black acrylic for a trim piece around my sub baffle and added some area to make a new fuse panel as well. HINT: If you cut plastic with a circular saw, be careful. The shredded bits flying off the blade sting quite a bit more than MDF dust.... I made a cardboard template and got the shape just right and then cut it out of the plastic. Here are the buss bars laid out. I used my Forstner bits and drilled some holes for the bolt-heads to fit through. Do I wish I would have bought a tap and die set for the buss bars so that I don't have to bolt the buss bar from the rear..............yeah, but what's done is done. This works but it does take a little more prep work to complete. Here are all the pieces assembled. Check out what happens when I pull off the paper backing. ..........SHINY Here's the test fit in the car. I found a gate latch that should work to secure the top of the tilting amp rack. It needed some grinding though. Amp rack test fit with the gate latch. Test fit in the car Amp rack tilting with a close up of the latch. Remember when I said I bought a VM-1 and that it wouldn't fit on my dash.....? The VM-1 is square and too high to fit anywhere in my dash cleanly. Guess what does fit...? Bar-graph LEDs. So I did a little prototype test with a couple of bar-graph LEDs and a bare PCB board. First off, I had to remove all the stock LED's. These things are tiny! All removed. Started to solder some lead wires from the VM-1 to my proto board. Proto board soldered. VM-1 wired up. Here's what the whole thing looks like. Works pretty slick although its a bummer I couldn't find any multicolor bar-graph LEDs that include blue.....so I'm stuck with green and red, possibly orange if I light up both LEDs in each segment. Since the bar-graph LEDs are fairly small, I most likely won't be able to have the voltage printed out next to each LED (maybe every other one) so that is where the VM-1 is nice. I'm brainstorming a few other ideas for this location in my dash so we'll see how this plays out. Yeah, the black acrylic came out a lot fancier then I was expecting. I was just looking for some dull black plastic to mount the buss bars too and when I pulled off the paper......... I've gotten most of my plastic parts from http://www.estreetplastics.com/ Good variety of stuff and the prices aren't that bad. Shipping is quick too. Thanks to the other SMDer's for the great posts on the actuator. Can't wait to get the switch permanently placed in the dash so I can start putting it to work.
