Need advice on bracing please :p

Recommended Posts

Ok so I got this box for my nightshade. I added a 3/4" panel for bracing along the baffle between the sub and port. I also deadened the trunk and resined the inside of the box. I only saw minimal gains and was concerned about the bracing possibly disrupting air flow and the small change in net cubes.

anyway while testing alot of things I removed the bracing siliconed the screw holes and replaced the screws as to fill the holes..

need less to say i lost 6 fing tenths,,, like wow

So bracing was def needed lmao but i bought some 3/8" all thread awhile back and Im not sure whether to use the rod or just put the mdf back in...

So before i go through with either i thought id bounce the idea around the forum real quick

The brace as it was.. or w.e

w.o bracing.. kinda redundant but just for clarity sake

i would be using two rods btw top and bottom as a single rod wont fit in the middle where the port and sub leave only a few mm between them.

any opinions or help would be appreciated.

Thanks

A MDF bracing would definitely mess with the airflow a little bit since it´s close to the aeroport, i would do a rod or a dowel, but that´s just me :)

3/8" is kind of small for all thread bracing. Even though you will be able to put bot the baffle and the back of the box under tension you are going to be limited somewhat by the amount of contact area of the nut/washer. Which is around 3/4" which is why you see people using larger sizes that accept washers that are 2" in dia or if you look for one of my threads I welded a nut to the plate and gained a contact area of 10 x 10. Ideally you would secure every thing so there is ZERO box flex that said if you have room double the top, bottom and sides. The goal is to direct the flow with out losing energy which we can see/feel as FLEX.

Ok soo.. before i started the other day, with the mdf brace in.. I did a test burp as a baseline. Which was 145.8

After removing the brace as I posted i dropped to 145.2

So today I put in several all thread braces well 3 in total

398849_10151133559842796_527012795_13483178_1139986325_n.jpg

Using the plate its sooo much stiffer than just with a nut and washer.. however lowes i guess doesnt carry these so i had to do without for now untill i get back out to home depot.

Idk if you can see this, but when i was tightening the top brace on the baffle I wasnt paying attention, and I heard the wood splitting... its not major but you can see the cracks on the inside. on the outside the washer and nut are just a little like dented in.. this did not however happen with the brace that uses the plates... stiffer stronger no cracking.. but i dont think its a huuuge issue if nothing else I could simply fiber glass the wall to restore strength or simply add another back panel right?

Anyway I tested like an hour ago...

And Im again at a 145.2

like wtf happened to my 145.8 all day everyday with the mdf...

im supposed to be making positive steps here not negative ones.

Any thoughts or advice?

Thanks

The MDF may have been good for that box directed airflow away from the port helping it load better. But I am not very familiar with trying just for numbers.

i swear some systems get damn gremlins in em lol SOME of it is weather, atmospheric pressure stuff like that....but other times its like :ughdunno: da hell happened lol

this might be dumb..but did you run nuts/washer on the inside of the mdf? basically sandwiching the mdf between the two nuts and washer...if not id try it
