OP, last I saw .223 ammo could be gotten for $300 for a thousand rounds if you shop right, .308 was over $500.

If you're looking to shoot your gun .308 is a very expensive way to go, and I wouldn't recommend it for any

newbs, specifically because it's so cost prohibitive.

Now dont get me wrong i was NOT badmouthing the 7.62x51 in any way shape or form because its still a bad ass rifle.... I just wanted him to know that purchasing that caliber SOLELY for range shooting would be quite a bit more expensive for the hobby lol....

You can get the steel cased ammo shit for a 5.56 for a few hundred dollars for 1000+ rounds... Yes its dirty shit but all you need to do is clean your weapon well after you shoot it...
