You do it the same way you do anything else. Repetition. So just like you train him to the "leave it" command, or "drop it" command, or "sit command", it's about consistency and repetition and also use a hand signal. He's obviously not going to be looking at you when you're yelling "stop" but if he doesn't hear you and looks your direction, cause he should always be looking for you as the pack leader, then he could see your hand signal and know "oh shit I have to stop"!

Leash training will help with this big time. So if you're walking, let him get in front of you, and do a quick little tug until he does stop, and as soon as you see him stop you say the "stop" command so he relates the action to the word.

I know it sounds silly, but get on the Ceasar Millan forum too and ask questions there. Lots of knowledgeable people over there.

I have an American Staffordshire Terrier named Ritz he is the biggest pain in the ass, stubborn, big spoiled brat but has protected me more times than 1. He has more than proven he will lay his life down for me if need be and no body better not fuck with me when he's around lol. I have a Chow and an American Bulldog and they are over protective but not nearly as over protective as my Terrier he does not play around when it comes to intruders you can't even play fight me without him getting mean as hell.

I spoil him lol BAD! because I have had him since he was a pup, he's a very dominant Alpha so it's a whole lot of checking him and his attitude but I am also very stern, he breaks the rule he gets punished, depending on the infraction it can rage from cage time (I have a kennel I had a welding guy build that we call solitary lol), punishment (stuck in the house while the other dogs go out and play, or the old grab him by the mouth look him in the eyes and say what I need to very stern and direct. All of my dogs are extremely respectful on and off the leash but like Scott said it takes repetition but also being the bad guy you can't let it slide or be nice when trying to train.

Also if you are chastising the dog make sure your family understands no petting or saying "it's okay". You can never let anyone undermine your authority in front of a pet. I would also suggest training him with your son and wife so he respects and fears you all equally. Well trained dogs will never bite the hand that feeds them but will always get in the ass of someone trying to get crazy.

Yep can run around leave my sight but will come hauling ass the minute I yell their names or yell in general lol. So much so my dumb as bricks chow has come running in mid shit but she has always been the not so bright one in the family. That took a lot longer to do though because it's hard finding places around other dogs that will allow me to have all of my dogs off leash with no bitching from other dog owners. My Terrier looks like a Pit (He basically is since his breed makes up 1/2 of a pit terrier breed) and my Bulldog though he is a huge vagina he is still a puppy who is twice the size of most dogs at the park with more time in him to grow larger. So I had to do it over time and get people use to them and also get them to not be as aggressive when playing with certain dogs because when we play at home, we wrestle, fight, tug o war a little bit of everything but its all rough fun to keep them sharp an agile. You can't do that at a dog park because the little shih tzu looks like a chew toy lol. What worked for me was a shock collar and those extendable leashes. I would release the leash for max distance from me and get them use to being away from me but always in my sights (don't do this if their strong enough to pull you because the leash will break). The shock collar was to get their attention if they got out of hand and didn't listen to verbal warnings. Then I started just putting the collar on them so they knew better. Eventually no shock collar and leashes come off once we are in the park. They also walk around my neighborhood off leash with no issues. The hardest part about that was making sure they didn't run into the streets.

i am trying to have my son and wife get in on the training.. its hard for my son right now he is 3 and the the pup is a pup so u know. i would like to think im doing a good job so far in the punishment and being the pack leader, he so far has respect for me and listens to me for the most part.

Try and spend as much time with him as possible. My friend has a dog that is probably the most protective dog I have ever seen. You can hardly rough house with anyone in the family before he comes and nips you in the butt, and it's not a gentle "play" nip either. It is also the biggest love hog too. After being at his house for awhile the dog treated me as part of the family. When another one of our friends came over and would come to mess with me, the dog would nip him, he actually knew who the "attacker" was. Was a damn smart dog.

wish i could let my dog run but in my city the terrier breed has been banned. kinda weird i got this dog at a dog shelter, they told me he was a pit but to say he was vizsla if asked. they didnt want to see him put down! but at the same time they were not takeing good care of him to for the fact that he was a pit. but i do have papers on him so noone can take him and put him down now. just dont want to take a chance that someone wants question.

No talk, no touch, no eye contact..............rules for everyone that comes over to your house! While training, these are very important tools! Everyone that comes over has to ignore him basically. Obviously it's more than that, but you can look it up.

I have had that happen to me so, police and all. Which is why I have to carry his papers with me wherever I go to avoid the confusion of trying to explain how he is not a pit.

^This plus when he gets to be a certain age (2-3 yrs old with my dog) he will begin to think he is the dominant one in the house your goal is continue to assert that you're head honcho and he better not step out of line. It can be difficult at times but he needs to know who runs shit and if you let him step out of line even once he will continue to try you to see how much he can get away with.
