TylerParrish Posted October 24, 2012 Report Posted October 24, 2012 Is it okay to build a box with just glue and silicone? Glue is titebond II and silicone in the gaps is liquid nails heavy duty. Really don't wanna use screws, but my dad suggested I should to keep it from breaking apart from the bass. Box is 3/4" birch. No internal bracing. Guest Posted October 24, 2012 Report Posted October 24, 2012 you dont HAVE to use screws. they're just there to hold the pieces of wood tightly between the glue. clamps will be your best friend here. using screws is fine. you can always just back them out when the glue dries and fill the holes with wood filler.

But never not used screws. Just wanna make sure it'll be fine. I use screws, but my baffle is only glued on with titebond 2, with 2 XL 15s on 4k, i have had no issues at all. Chris Hammer Posted October 24, 2012 Report Posted October 24, 2012 Glue is stronger than screws...even on mdf..especially on birch ply. Screws are just easier than clamping it when you glue it which is why I usually use them. Plus most my boxes get carpet so screws arent ugly. No screws = a clean finished look and easier to paint. Get some strap clamps and corner clamps if you plan on not using screws and try and do some at a time not the whole box. Clean joint work and proper gluing is the key...and will be more than strong enough when you are done. I was planning on no screws for my next one becuase we want to texture coat and don't want to use wood filler. IMO i like liguid nals better than silicone for sealing up the inside..and I feel nothing works better than using the caulking gun with your finger behind it lol. Chris Hammer Posted October 24, 2012 Report Posted October 24, 2012 Also if you have acces to a dado blade you could do rabbit and dado joints and make a box strong as hell without any screws for sure. Plus easier to assemble and keep square. You can do those joints with a regualr blade they are just time consuming but I think Imma do it on the next box for my friends truck. We have access to a full woodshop with everything in it...but you can do basic rabbits and dado's with a regular table saw.
