RooTxBeeR Posted October 28, 2012 Report Posted October 28, 2012 So I have no AC unit, want to put a second stock alt in that location. Now as far as putting on the alt and making sure it runs, do I need to have a wiring harness for it, to connect it to my computer or how does that work? I was going to be going to a pick and pull and get a alternator for cheap. fox_racin4 Posted October 28, 2012 Report Posted October 28, 2012 All you need to do is figure out how the alt turns on. GM alts are a 1 wire turn on so all it needs is a switched 12v signal 1998 gmc extd cab 12 crossfire C710s 4 SAZ-4500s 3 Singer 400A altsbuncha mids/highs Team Asshole
RooTxBeeR Posted October 28, 2012 Author Report Posted October 28, 2012 Ohk, what I was thinking, when I go and find an alt, just cut the wires that are already connected to the one I am going to get. Then just extend them into the ones already in my car. the_garynator Posted October 31, 2012 Report Posted October 31, 2012 how many wires are on your stock alternator? My 240sx is a 4 wire, 1 4ga power, 1 ground, and a 2 wire connector. The larger wire into the connector runs to the battery so that it can sense when to kick on, and the smaller one is for the dash light. I ran the power output wire (positive) on my second alternator directly to the rear battery, ran a ground to the rear battery. I spliced the dash light wire into the stock alternator's harness. I ran the battery sensing wire to the rear battery as well. I could have run the ground to the chassis, but the car is pretty rusty and I wanted the best connection possible. I could have also spliced the battery voltage sensing wire into the stock harness and run the power output into the front battery, but since my amp is pulling from the rear battery, I wanted the power to go directly there, with as little resistance as possible. Not sure if your honda is the same, but since they're similar years and both Japanese, I would assume they are similar. Guest Posted October 31, 2012 Report Posted October 31, 2012 from what i've seen, if someone says they have a 3 wire alt, that means there are 3 wires on the harness that clips into the regulator on the side. you dont count the main charging/ground wires that go to the battery.

Truconcept Posted December 4, 2012 Report Posted December 4, 2012 do people who have multiple alternators have custom belts built? **actin bad like a kid at six flags**
RooTxBeeR Posted December 4, 2012 Author Report Posted December 4, 2012 do people who have multiple alternators have custom belts built? I believe it depends on the location of the alt, for me I should be able to use a standard belt and be fine, if your alt is in a odd position from normal, or have more than one in certain spots that are not normal yeah. Just need to make sure you can fit a belt where you fit your alt.
