SixTwoRado Posted November 5, 2012 Report Posted November 5, 2012 Alright you guys I need some help on what to do here. Let me give you some background on what is in my truck right now and what Im planning on putting in. I currently have all stock electrical with kicker 4 gauge wiring split to both my amps. I have an Alpine PDX-F4 pushing 100 watts to two sets of 6.5" Focal Polyglass components in the front and back. Then I have a Sundown SAZ-1000D running at 2 ohms and pushing 600 watts to my current JL Audio 12W3 in a sealed enclosure. My truck sounds amazing to me and anyone else that hears it, but Im getting too use to it and need more bass haha. It is all tuned with my DD-1 as well and I currently get some voltage drop down to the high 12s on some songs like Decaf tracks. My stock alternator is a 110 amp. That is just some background for you. I plan on getting a sundown SA-12D2 to run at 1 ohm and 1,000 watts of the Sundown amp. I will be upgrading all my wiring to Knuknoceptz 1/0 OFC and then splitting to the 4 gauge to go to the amps. I am also going to do the big three in my engine bay with 1/0 and installing a XS Power D2400 under the hood. Then maybe I will eventually get a DC power H/O alternator. Now Im new to box building, but Ive been playing around with winisd, torres, and designing in google sketchup. I want to build a box for the SA 12 around 1.8 cubic feet and tuned to 34hz or so. The problem is I have an extra cab truck and I want to keep my sub behind just my drivers seat like it is now. So to get the tuning right, and to be able to fit the box, I need to use aeroports. i dont have enough room for a slot ported box if I want to keep the other seat back there open. I have come up with this design and everything checks out except I can not get enough port area using just one 4" aeroport. I get rediculous rear air port velocities in WinISD and I imagine I will get port noise which I definitely dont want. I am limited on length of the port and Ive tried every combination of aeroports I could think of and none of them really work out. A single 4" is ideal but I dont want to get port noise. What are your suggestions? I know I am writing a lot and posting a lot of pictures, but I want to give the best background to get the best help possible. My truck is nothing crazy as far as audio, but I want everything clean and sounding good and I love my bass. This is an offroad/daily driven truck so Im not looking to win any competitions or anything, but I have been very big into car audio lately and doing a lot of my friends cars for them. Here is a picture of my truck so you know what this is going in. It is a king cab frontier. Here is the space in my truck I have to work with and my current sealed downfire box. I will be removing that jumpseat completely to get more room so the box can sit on that little hump. Im limited by the angle of the seat as well cause I sit back pretty far when I drive. Here is the basic design in sketchup that I have come up with that will fit behind the seat and meet all my requirements. I do realize the design of this will have to change a little to make building it easier. How would you guys arrange the sub and port to best fit my truck. Also, here is the torres calculation for that box. Everything works out except the port area. Would i get port noise with only 7" of port area per foot. What would you guys do?
SLAYER1805 Posted November 5, 2012 Report Posted November 5, 2012 I have a 2.3 cubic foot box with a 4" aero tuned to 34hz, the length of the port is 10" and I have no port noise at all. Idk if I got lucky with this box but it sounds great. Then again I was running a RF P1 on 180 watts so idk if that was why I didn't get any port noise. I'm no pro but that's just my input.
Joe X Posted November 5, 2012 Report Posted November 5, 2012 3 3" aeros run partially external or elbowed could do the job.

Nah thanks for the input man. Its good to know you had good results with just a 4" aero. You had even less port area per foot since you were at 2.3 cubic feet. My SA-12 on 1,000 watts is probably going to push more air than a P1 though haha. Id still like to hear from others who have used aeroports with low port area per foot. I do see a lot of people running a single 12 with a single 4" aero. But the calculations just dont add up and i dont see how they arent getting serious port noise.
SixTwoRado Posted November 5, 2012 Author Report Posted November 5, 2012 3 3" aeros run partially external or elbowed could do the job. Yah I calculated that and they would have to be about 25" long each. Maybe that could be a possibility but isnt it better to run a single aero. Or double. Could triple hurt the sound quality? Also arent the aeroports only 17" long? Id also like to not stick out of the box too much cause I have tools and stuff that have to go back there and occasionally a third person crammed back there . Im open to suggestions on a different box design as well.
Nate Futuristic Posted November 5, 2012 Report Posted November 5, 2012 from what i heard you want 1 large port > over multiple small ones mess with box volume to get desired tuning or consider slot port down rpping vanderbilt. 30 miles from victoria. i own the 3rd loudest setup here out of 3. but i did put together all 3 setups ^^ Cant wait to swalllow Ghost's babies
SixTwoRado Posted November 5, 2012 Author Report Posted November 5, 2012 from what i heard you want 1 large port > over multiple small ones mess with box volume to get desired tuning or consider slot port Well Im open to anything that will work and sound good. Im fine with multiples I just really dont want anything sticking out of the box too far. Ive messed with all the box specs as much as possible with a single 4" aero and the most port area I can get is like 8 inches per foot. Dont know if I can get by on that and not gett any port noise. It sucks cause where I want the sub behind my seat I dont think I have the room for a slot ported box. It also seems like a slot port would be really hard to build considering the box has to be angled to clear my seat. Worst case scenario I just lose my other back seat and my only tool/ storage space to do it like in this frontier pic. But I really dont want to do that because I need the space back there.

The easiest thing to do is to tweak the dimensions in a way that simplifies things out, you can get extensions/elbows to workaround the length or you can go cheap and go with PVC pipe and likewise priced accessories for them. I would recommend measuring your space exactly, kerfed slots can do a good job controlling turbulence.

Yeah I thought it was probably because of the sub not moving alot of air, put up a 136 blown on 180 watts. I'm happy with it but its time to go a little bigger. I plan on doing another box with an aero because of the results I had with my current box. Someone correct me on this if I'm wrong but don't you need less port area with an aero over a slot port?
SixTwoRado Posted November 5, 2012 Author Report Posted November 5, 2012 From my research you dont "need" less port area with an aeroport, but instead they don't require as much port area to combat port noise.
