Because you set the gains without the sub connected.

Any time you have have a power wire next to your frame put some rubber hosing (or cut up an innertube) around it. The wire is bound to wiggle (due to driving or flex) and the casing will eventually wear through.

huh? it's not a cb radio. I can't see how that would matter.

no it doesn't. Not one bit.

plus, setting gains with a DMM is pointless, but that is totally irrelevant here.

I could see setting gains without speakers hooked up being a problem with a tube type amp, but i think the better ones have open circuit protection. O.p. did you dead short the terminals by accident? Also, When you where setting gains did you start out with the speakers hooked up then unhooked them?

If there was no sub connected the amp may have seen the DMM as a load and the open circuit protection may have acted incorrectly. I'm not one to speculate though so I won't say that's what caused it but it's all I can think of.
