Why does my amp do this?

remove the speaker wires from each channel one by one remove one set of wires turn it up for a bit if it turns off put back the set of wires and try taking off another set of speaker wires till your amp stays on....another thing to try if you got a dmm put the positive lead on the 12v side and the negative lead on each speaker wire thats a quick way of finding a speaker wire that is pinched if one wire is pinched your dmm should show 12v

No, it wont show 12v. Your speakers never (or should never) receive DC voltage, let alone 12 volts from the battery.

If you want to do this test correctly you set the multimeter to ohms or beep/short and look for a short. You may need to test between ground and each terminal as well since the a positive lead may not necessarily be shorted to a negative lead.

EDIT

Your problem is likely clipping. What frequency did you test the HU and amp at and were your tests done with crossovers on each active or disabled? Having crossovers enabled on both at the same time will result in compounding your lowpass slope which will sound like ass..

so your saying if a wire is pinched by a piece of metal from the vehicle that it wont show 12v on the dmm i can make a quick video tomorrow showing you its possible. its like saying an amplifier grounded to the body of a car wont show 12v when checking it with a dmm if a speaker wire is being pinched by a metal piece it will show 12v

No, a speaker wire will not show 12v when pinched unless the amp is pretty much blown, and it would only show that while the amp was power-cycling in and out of protect mode at best.

A pinched wire which has 12v will either burn up, pop a fuse, or spark a lot.

Any time you have have a power wire next to your frame put some rubber hosing (or cut up an innertube) around it. The wire is bound to wiggle (due to driving or flex) and the casing will eventually wear through.

maybe i might have said something wrong i posted if he puts the positive lead on the 12v side of the amp and then the negative lead on the speaker wires if the wire is pinched that would mean the cars body is touching that wire and that wire since its getting pinched by the cars body is now grounded to the body since the 12v lead is on the 12v side of the amp once the negative lead touches the wire that is grounded(pinched) dmm should read 12v i might have said something wrong in my previous post

why do you play your deck at full tilt?To me thats just distortion.I would'nt go any higher than 28sh on that deck.Just for cleaner sound.

Please read before you post lol, he has a dd1 and has tuned it showing no clipping at full.

I've had the same problem one way. Ended up I was over powering the speakers too much

Good rule of thump is go by what fuse size is being used in these amps. The higher the more amperage it pulls, this is what I look at.

I'll stick a 300 amp fuse in a potato and sell it to you for $2k.

I've been really busy today do I couldn't do any testing on it. I have a little free time tomorrow and I will try and update.

@trey- the speakers I had before these were even worse quality than the ones I have now. Only different is that they are 2 ohms and not 4 like my old ones.

Maybe it's just not liking the low impedance, even though it says it does.

I actually fixed a friends amp today .. His was cutting out also and it turned out his RCA cable was being pulled alot so it disconnected from the inside so it was a quick fix

the speakers can handle power just fine.

When i say they arent exactly high end, i refer to build quality.

whats going on in his car totally seems like either a signal issue at that volume or an amp that doesnt like what its seeing and cutting itself off.
