I was wondering what the consensus is on welding lead vs audio wire for power and big 3 upgrade? Raptorman Posted February 5, 2013 Report Posted February 5, 2013 People have their preferences. Welding cable is generally cheaper. But it doesn't look pretty. Just a basic flat black normally. I just found some Excelene 1/0 OFC wire on ebay that is $2.60 per foot. Radaflex comes out to around $3.10 per foot. Both brands are nice. armykyle1 Posted February 5, 2013 Report Posted February 5, 2013 Welding lead typically is silver tinned and sometimes the jacket isn't as tough as ca wire jackets. Welding lead is more porn to corrode, but you can hit it with some no oz. I've used welding lead, but I prefer silver tinned ca wire. Skullz Posted February 5, 2013 Report Posted February 5, 2013 My thoughts and views on the subject are that welding wires jacket covering the wire is meant for abuse being dragged on the ground and ran over by cars and trucks over time while still holding up to the abuse. Now try that with audio wire and you'll be sorely disappointed in it's capabilities to take that abuse, i like to use something that is capable of surviving under the hoods temperature extremes and nasty weather conditions that can cause the audio wires jacket to become extremely stiff and crack in really cold temperatures. Not as flexible as KnuKonceptz or Audio Technix wire or whatever, but it wil still do the job. i just bought 100ft of red and 100ft of black when i redone my install a couple weeks ago...was very easy to work with,you may not be able to tie it in a knot but who really needs to that.lol.....fit my 1/0 copper logs perfectly and the wire is ofc..on a 100ft spool it was 220 shipped...2.20 per foot...i will always use the excelene cable in my builds from now on. dodge 3500 1-ton 4 door dually, pioneer 5500 head unit 8 12in pure audio subs powered by 4 vfl 1100.1's . 4.pioneer 6x9's ,8 vfl mid bass and 6 5in ab mids on an ab sq3200 and sq3000 amps, 18 batteries.. 220amp and 320amp alternators. it all = one loud farm truck ..160.6 on a burp at 44hz

Carbon Posted February 5, 2013 Report Posted February 5, 2013 Never heard of the wire having lead in it. Personally I like Knu 1/0 OFC. But any 100% copper wire that meets 1/0 true awg specs will perform pretty much equally. You pay more for a brand name, RF,Knu,Kicker and more for flexibility. Trying to get welding cable to go into an amp with a 45º input bend will be tough.
