DC Power 270a Only Making 170@2000rpm On Escalade

Recommended Posts

12v is every reason for it to be making 270a

No never that. Because DC power NEVER makes a bad product!

Just to be clear, this thread was not started to bash DC or their products. If the alt is bad, then so be it, I'm sure DC will make it right. I just don't want to send it back to them for repair until I am certain it is the problem.

he's not bashing it. cody is being sarcastic because brian seems to think that a company can never make a mistake when building something and in turn ship a "damaged" unit.

Im not even defending DC Power.... Im giving him reasons on why his alternator is not clamping out at 270amps, when there is clearly no reason for it to be making 270amps...

And FYI Ive been selling more MechMan alts for people recently then DC Power... lol

12v is every reason for it to be making 270a.

Anyhooo... I'm going to bed. Going to think a bit more on this and see if I can't come up with something

Brian I think the part where he is losing you and disagrees is that his voltage should not be dropping if the alternator were charging properly. With a 270a alt, 1 D3100, and a 2500w amp, there should be NO voltage drop period.

Now to go back to a few useful posts here, as AMI said, check ALL of your connections. Just 1 loose power or ground connection can cause this issue.

If the connections are not the issue, then I would suspect a faulty alternator. I have been shipped a dead alt before, it happens. Parts go bad, they may bench out when they are first assembled and shipped, but shit happens and parts may be bad.

I feel like we are getting caught up in the details and getting distracted from the issue at hand.

Issue is the alternator is not producing enough power to keep the voltage up - and is producing way under what it should be capable of, regardless of the amp, regardless of the fuse going to the amp. At the end of the day: it's 12v and 180a coming from a 270a alt, which is less than acceptable performance wise.

I guess you missed my post lol, one of two things is happening

Bad connection or bad alt

That explains the voltage drop with low output current regardless of what amp is connected. OR there is a output delay due to PCM control.

Is it possible that the battery is fried? I'm not too familiar with how batteries work, but if one or more cells are dead, wouldn't that bring the voltage down? It might be useful to see if it acts differently with the truck off. However, I still don't know if that would explain a lack in output.

I checked the connections and nothing ^seemed* loose or dangerous, but I didn't go over with a fine tooth comb by any means. I'd believe the lag: but this is 5-10 second issue we are talking about. Do you think that is still a possibility?

I was also thinking about the bad alt, since the power is almost exactly 2/3 what it should be - like a bad winding or something.

Greg: if you want to come up to my house one of these days, we take a really detailed look at everything
