engine knocking like crazy. do i have a claim?

Driving home tonight stopped at a light, Pulling away from the light, the car lost power got a little skiddish. Engine light started flashing..

pretty sure it was a misfire.

Following this the low coolant light came on, temp gauge rose to about half. I put the heat on max and did my best to get it home. Which I did. Thank god. The temp gauge continued to rise, low coolant coming on and off periodically. Got stopped at a couple lights, where to heat rose quite a bit engine remained skiddish especially at low rpms. Once I got up to speed 40-50mph it wasnt bad except for the coolant issues..

During the last 5-10 min of driving the temp gauge was maxxed out, and the hot light came on as well... i did see a bit more smoke than usual out of the exhaust when the incident first happened white ish smoke i mean i looked like reg exhaust just a lot...

but i never saw it like that again..

checking the coolant overflow tank it was almost empty but not bone dry. looked normal color wise. no oil that i could see

checking the oil dipstick the oil looked idk kinda normal but a lil light. people online describe a milky looking oil as a sign of gasket failure.. it looked like new oil. not dark or even semi dark like right out of the jug oil. although i did just change oil ~300 miles ago..

So ive got a list of shops ill call first thing. Is there anything besides filling the coolant with H2O to get it to the shop which are all within 5 min driving.

didnt read your whole post but do you have a shit load of white smoke coming out the exhaust?

what year make and model is it? Can you scan the OBD2 to see what the CEL was? If there is no water in the oil then I wouln't jump straight to a blown head gasket but yo need to find out where the coolant went. If it was just a leak and you were overheating because of low/no coolant then it may not be too bad but driving it like that was not a good decision. If it happens again call a wrecker or just park it where you are and get a ride. No sense in causing more damage than you have to.

at first right when it happened. kinda alot not crazy like fog the whole street but a decent amount yes. never saw it again though,,

milky looking oil will only happen if the gasket blew from the coolant line to the oil line. causing coolant to mix with the oil. (they are not lines.. but oil makes its way to the top of the heads.) if that is where it happened then you wont have a really bad oil leak but itll leak.

it sounds like you could have a blown gasket or even a cracked block. sometimes the block will slighty crack causing oil to leak right around the piston ring. then causing more problems. you definitely need to have your engine serviced.

and driving to the point of overheating is only a way to destroy your engine. you should have called a wrecker. you risk damaging the rings and other various components.

If the smoke is really white then youre probably burning oil and coolant. if it has a sweet smell to it then youre just burning coolant. most likely leaking into one of the cylinders.

99 monte 3.8L I mean out in the middle of bufu.. at 12am didnt really think i had a choice but to try and get home i live quite a ways from where i work a tow woulda been crazy expensive

99 monte 3.8L I mean out in the middle of bufu.. at 12am didnt really think i had a choice but to try and get home i live quite a ways from where i work a tow woulda been crazy expensive

most cars have an emergency system that shuts off multiple cylinders to pump air through the motor. but if you keep getting hot then you can blow the motor. lesser of two evils i suppose

so could i drive it down the street you think? or tow only?

if that happened in a single instant and not overtime something just flat out broke. i wouldnt drive it at all. let alone turn the vehicle on unless you know what youre doing and trying to locate the problem.
