This is what I used on mine, and I just ran it off of a switch. Turn the switch on, led's turn on, use the remote to change colors.

I mean you can run it without a switch, but it gets annoying having the lights on constantly, especially if they are inside the passenger compartment and not just the trunk.

I have one of those controllers in my car. It will come on the first time you plug it in. Once you turn it off it won't come back on until you hit the ON button again. Kepp in mind if you remove main battery ground it will come back on upon closing the circuit and then you can just turn it off with the remote. It will remember the last setting each time you turn it on and off as long as the power isn't removed from the source. All you need is a POS and NEG connection to hook it up and it comes with a plug that has bare ends to attach directly to a power supply if not used in a car, or you can extend the leads and just connect it straight to the car's power source.

I wanted to do something like this, but I would rather have on and off controlled entirely with a 12v signal. If there is another way to do variable color without annoying box then that would be preferred.

You need a light led amp to even make the color second of all the box is so small. Not that big if a deal.
