CRudy Posted May 7, 2013 Report Posted May 7, 2013 Alright I'm probably going to make myself sound stupid in this thread so bare with me. Alright, is there a such thing as "dirty power"? Like do some amps put out shitty power so to speak? for example, you buy some crappy amp and hook it up to whatever your hooking it up too but you set all the gains right so there's no clipping or anything else. Could the amp still blow whatever its hooked up too because the power is dirty, or would it just not put out close to rated power, and sound awful doing it?

CRudy Posted May 7, 2013 Author Report Posted May 7, 2013 Oh shoot, my bad haha. So could you still blow whatever the amps hooked up to if all the gains are set correctly, or would it just sound bad because its a crappy amp and not do rated power?
RobertR Posted May 7, 2013 Report Posted May 7, 2013 Alright, is there a such thing as "dirty power"? Yes there is and its good to see somebody new to car audio that is concerned with it. Most people dont know or dont care about it. So that puts you a huge step ahead of most people. Like chevy said... dirty = clipped or distorted. There are certain products you can buy that will give you a dirty signal and certain products that are less likely to distort. There is a little bit of a price difference between the two but it is well worth it. Clipped signals not only sound like garbage but will destroy your gear. You can get a clipped signal from anything you buy. That's why the majority of us here will advise people to use an O scope or a dd1 to set up their systems. It will sound better and last a hell of a lot longer. I personally have a lot more respect for a clean sounding system then a loud and distorted set up. BoomZoom808 Posted May 7, 2013 Report Posted May 7, 2013 To add to that the dirty power may not be the amp at all. It could be a dirty/clipped signal from the head unit, garbage in to the amp = garbage out of the amp. 2010 Mazda 3s 2.5L Pioneer DEH-X9600BHS Knu OFC 1/0 SS Platinum AGM / XS Power XP750 Alpine PDX F-4 / Morel Maximo 5 + Coax 5 IA 10.1 / SSA XCON 12

CRudy Posted May 7, 2013 Author Report Posted May 7, 2013 Well i'm currently bassless right now, trying to get a job for a new set up but i installed my brothers system in my jeep not too long ago which was 2 rockford fosgate punch hx2's wired at 4 ohms in a sealed box on an alpine pdx 1000.1 (1000-ish rms at 4 ohms). I currently have a jensen flip out touch screen headunit, yeah i know its a piece but it does the job for me while im on a budget haha. Crappy battery, no big three, and stock alt, which is either 136 amps or 160 amps, idk. I plan on doing the big three asap and getting a nice battery or two just so I can beef up the electrical a little before i put another system in there
RobertR Posted May 7, 2013 Report Posted May 7, 2013 what kind of car do you have? BMW 325i Kenwood KVT-647DVD re xxx components re 6.5 FR's 2 RE XXX 12's 2 US amps MD3D's 2 batcap 4k's
Ben Fultz Posted May 7, 2013 Report Posted May 7, 2013 Figured I'd mention this as no one else has, you can set up your head-unit / amps with a scope / DD1 and still have clipping if your music is "dirty" to start with or if you use a 3.5mm jack for music from a Ipod / phone ect.
