thegr8cody
well on certain notes it sounds like a rattling noise i let my buddy hear it and he said it was distortion cause my voltage was dropping so i seriesed my voice coils at 4 ohms and he said my lpf was set to high so he changed it now im picking up less notes and its still doing it.any ideas on what it is on most notes its real clear and hard but then on some theres no sound just that rattling noise and my voltage dont drop at all now so i know its not distortion i think its a defect in the speaker Quote 1998 gmc sierra h/u:eclipse cd3200 sub:dd9518g d1.5 amp:jl e300/4 sub amp:dd m2a front stage:id ctx65cs dc power 270 alt lots of kicker 1/
audiofanaticz
sounds like a messed up coil starting to unravel or come loose, or even possibly rubbing. Tap on the side of the cone when the stereo is off, and just push the cone in and out a bit, if you hear it, its the coil.
thegr8cody
no tried that pushed on the center and squeezed the sides to see if it was wobbling didnt hear nothing so im not sure is there a way to test the coils? audiofanaticz
Digital volt meter is about the only way, and see what ohm each coil is. If you got dual 4 ohm coils, and you have a coil reading signifigantly higher you have a burnt coil, and even tho its still working, it will fry soon. If everything is fine, then chances are you are clipping or bottoming out so turn the gain down a bit.
thegr8cody
nah i seriouly doubt its clipping and i know its not bottoming out it has a 2 1/2" excursion motor its just one some notes. i'll try the coil thing when i find my volt meter Quote 1998 gmc sierra h/u:eclipse cd3200 sub:dd9518g d1.5 amp:jl e300/4 sub amp:dd m2a front stage:id ctx65cs dc power 270 alt lots of kicker 1/
AI James
maybe its that humungous box? not saying it is but maybe you should try free airing it on low power to see if its the sub or just that when its in the box and your slamming on it your excessing the mechanical limits. thegr8cody
what would cause clipping? the amp is 1500 rms at 4 ohms i got a kinetik 1400 and 180 amp alt and voltage dont drop so i dont see how i'd be clipping it Quote 1998 gmc sierra h/u:eclipse cd3200 sub:dd9518g d1.5 amp:jl e300/4 sub amp:dd m2a front stage:id ctx65cs dc power 270 alt lots of kicker 1/

What amp do you have, 1500 rms at 4 ohms is quite impressive.
