port area

There is a lot of information in the loudspeaker cookbook. Don't think I would be allowed to post it here (or anywhere else) for copyright reasons.

Vance performs a lot of tests with graphs for each test and detailed explanations dealing with different port sizes for given drivers. You quickly learn there is a lot more to it than just port noise.

If you really want to learn about speaker design, the book is a must read. I have read it several times, and have performed several of tests myself just to see how they compare to some of the software predictions.

Current system:

1997 Blazer - (4) Customer Fi NEO subs with (8) American Bass Elite 2800.1s

Previous systems:

2000 Suburban - (4) BTL 15's and (4) IA 40.1's = 157.7 dB at 37 Hz.

1992 Astro Van - (6) BTL 15's and (6) IA 40.1's = 159.7 dB at 43 Hz.

Krakin's Home Dipole Project

Krakin, are you some sort of mad scientist?

I would have replied earlier, but I was measuring the output of my amp with a yardstick . . .

What you hear is not the air pressure variation in itself

but what has drawn your attention

in the two streams of superimposed air pressure variations at your eardrums

An acoustic event has dimensions of Time, Tone, Loudness and Space

Everyone learns to render the 3-dimensional localization of sound based on the individual shape of their ears,

thus no formula can achieve a definite effect for every listener.

Hey, BKolfo! I seriously wanted to say thank you on behalf of many of us here that like to hone our craft. I just wanted to let you know I just obtained a copy of the Loudspeaker Cookbook and I'll be giving it a thorough read. Thank you for shining light down a dark tunnel for those that care to walk down the tunnel. I'll be sure to soak up the material and hopefully get a good grasp of the material. Thanks again, you've been a big help, especially in helping me personally with my blowthrough :)

Im not the one you want to try to troll. Just a fyi for you.

I just cut my last two fingers off on my left hand.

Another subject that get jacked up every time it gets posted.

A couple of quick highlights:

Port area is NOT based on box volume. It is based on driver Sd and Xmax along with tuning frequency.

The same driver in 4 cuft or 6 cuft needs the same amount of port area. A driver with high Xmax needs more port area in 4 cuft than a driver with low Xmax in 4 cuft.

"Bandwidth" is NOT based on port size (this statement is crazy if you know anything about how a port works).

Only way the port area would affect bandwidth is if the port is small enough that it does not operate correctly.

and even at this we are not even beginning to scratch the surface of the technical side of ports. there is also the understanding that a port area of (for example) 20in^2 isnt the same as another port area of 20in^2 at a different size.

what i mean by this is that lets say you have a port of 2" x 10" = 20in^2. this port will not behave the same as, lets say a 4"x5" port, which also equals 20in^2. at this point we are looking at the overall efficiency of the port, regardless of other factors, due to the surface resistance of the internal surfaces of the port itself.

sounds like we could have a few very interesting conversations about enclosures bfolko4. its good to see some other knowledgeable members discussing the technical side of enclosures for a change. im so used to the "torres box calculator + basic first grade rule of thumb = im an acoustical engineer" type of people trying to sound like they know what they are talking about.

Lol.. I had a feeling bkolfo4 was going to rip his last hairs out on this one. I think he's actually the one that made me look further into it and understand that the whole "1/3 cone area" and "X inches per cube" notion wasn't the greatest to follow by.

not trying to be a dick at all. common sense should tell you that different applications require different things. if i were trying to be a dick you would know it.
