MonkeyMan
So, I've just realised that when I blip the throttle in my car, I get voltage spikes in excess of 16volts. Also, the alternator seems to cold charge at pretty much 15volts, which I feel is too high. It drops to around 14.6volts when warm.... So, whats going on? regulator on its way out? something else I've missed? The alternator casing is connected directly to the battery with 0ga cable, as is the positive output terminal of the alt. Any suggestions would be great! Thanks!
Miguels
check for belt slip.. is the alt aftermarket or stock? my logshttp://www.stevemead...-my-new-set-up/my blow through loghttp://www.stevemead...future-updates/ 96 ss http://www.stevemeadedesigns.com/board/topic/164094-96-impala-ss-build/
SnowDrifter
Are we talking about a spike when you are at idle and revving? Or any change in RPMs? ~~~~~~~~SAY NO TO PHOTOBUCKET~~~~~~~~ Snow's DD-1 tracks here: https://www.stevemeadedesigns.com/board/topic/167433-snows-dd-1-tracks/ My take on OFC vs CCA: https://www.stevemeadedesigns.com/board/topic/110381-things-that-piss-you-off-in-the-car-audio-world/?do=findComment&comment=2461444
Guest
the alts i've bought from ebay had this issue. spiking to 16v then settling at 14.
MonkeyMan
Aftermarket alternator... Sitting at idle, might be at 14.8volts, quickly rev it to ~2000rpm and let off the throttle, and the voltage spikes to 16+ volts. I dont think the belt is slipping, as there's pretty much no load on the alternator.
RooTxBeeR
There doesn't need to be a load on the alternator for it to slip. tacomaguy1
He's saying when he revs it the alt spikes to 16v Belt slip wouldn't cause that...especially with no load. Alt is probably bad, contact seller/manufacture and see what's up Team Flex Issues
MonkeyMan
It spikes when you let off the throttle? drive around at 2000rpm, and its "fine" (well, as fine as charging at nearly 15volts can be) drop the revs suddenly, and the voltage spikes... (although it could be increasing the revs suddenly that causes the spike) could it really be belt slip causing this?

Some batteries/caps would help absorb the voltage spike too. Does it remain charging at 14.6 at idle or does it drop? ~~~~~~~~SAY NO TO PHOTOBUCKET~~~~~~~~ Snow's DD-1 tracks here: https://www.stevemeadedesigns.com/board/topic/167433-snows-dd-1-tracks/ My take on OFC vs CCA: https://www.stevemeadedesigns.com/board/topic/110381-things-that-piss-you-off-in-the-car-audio-world/?do=findComment&comment=2461444
