H/O alt or batteries?

Your electrical setup should all be designed in one step.

I have done vids and write ups on this.

Basically, you take the power you have, or want. Then figure what batts you need to supply that. Then you figure the alt you need to charge those batts.

If one components is lacking, it will not perform up to par.

So lets figure for a 2500W amp.

Lets give it 70% efficiency because that is an average of what many amps are.

So it will take 3571W of consumption to make that power.

Figure your batteries to supply that + 1000W for engine and car electrical.

4571W of battery juice (or more)

D3400 is rated at 4000W and 65aH

D925 is rated at 2000W and 28aH

Total is 6000W and 93aH.

Not bad, we do like overhead because of losses in efficiency/heat etc....

So now we need to charge 93aH of battery in the quickest times.

The ratio of 1:1 is the lowest we will go. 93A of charge will charge 93aH batteries at that 1:1. But remember, we have loss in the alts too. Maybe 30% loss.

So we will need about a 133A alternator minimum. Anything above that is just better and better.

If you are buying in steps due to budget. A smaller alt than 133A will just take longer to charge the batts. The stock alt could be that size depending on the car, or not much smaller.

So it is my opinion that you can use the stock alt for the time being and you should get the batteries first.

If you had a lot more power I may suggest otherwise but that is my assessment.

^^^^ thank you! That's basically the answer I was looking for! My current alt is 120 amps so I think i'm gonna do my batts first since it's not too much longer than what im going to need.

Hmm, never heard of them. There are tons of off brand alternator manufacturers out there. Some are junk, some are great.

With any mechanical device, it is best to go with a trusted source and not chase a cheap deal.

Most will tell you Mechman is among the best and they do have a 2 year warranty.
