What's more important, good amp, or good subs?

Recommended Posts

I know, it's like asking which came first, the chicken or the egg? But, I think it is a fair question that everyone might have a different answer for. So say, someone is on a bugdget, and can't afford hi end amp and subs, what would be the better buy. A high end amp and low end subs, or high end subs but a low end amp.. OK, 3,2,1..GO

Personal opinion: I'd rather have a good amp. You'll get further feeding a cheap sub a bit more clean power than a good sub some POS clipped weak power

Edit: Putting my money where my mouth is.

First amp I ever owned was a crown XLS 5000. I had it run to a power acoustik mofo. Cheap sub, but it did fairly well for what it was. I could feed more power to it than I could with a smaller amp because it was getting CLEAN power. A big amp dialed back, no clipping = a lot less heat.

First amp I got for car audio: Crescendo 3500. Ran it to a kicker comp, some old RF punch 12s, and a sundown SA-12. Same deal - I pretty much gave all of them as much power as they would handle mechanically. Didn't worry about a smaller box or something to handle the power because I knew the subs wouldn't handle it thermally if I fed it everything that amp had. But in a normal sized box, I never ran into a single issue

Lol I'm only running 14k watts with no big 3 and does mid 155s so nothing else matters lmao you need good amp and subs but if I had to make a choice it would be an amp first

DUDE, with all that power and money invested, why have'nt you upgraded your big 3??? :WTFBubble:

I'd rather say good box before good subs or amp. Doesn't matter how good your amps or subs are if your box is shit.

X2

I've made some boxes for low end subs and they shit all over any sub in the same power range in a crappy box.

This is true, but I believe OP's question was around the raw equipment used vs. the design of things
