Possible job for the future

Recommended Posts

Long story short, my dad has owned a window tint shop for 25+ years. He started it fresh out of high school and has built it into one of the biggest in the area with clientele including all local dealerships, all city vehicles, sheriffs department, DEA, etc. He does residential buildings as well and it obviously keeps him very busy, and has a good business for our family.

Throughout the years though, as I have gotten older, we have added new services. When I first got into car audio when I was about 12, we started doing simple installs. My dad knew how to do certain things in car audio ,basically the basics, but past that he was as knew as me . Since then (about 10 years) I have read and read and studied and learned how to do, basically anything else on my own, through reading and trial and error (such as building boxes, fiber glassing, kick panels, etc.) So although I feel I know a lot and know how to do a lot, I also feel I am limited in the area because I have taught myself everything and have never had one to teach me and critique my work.

With that being said, I am graduating in December from college with a bachelors in business management, my dad has just purchased a second shop in the DFW area, and is expanding his business. Because of this I most likely will end up, running one of the two shops he currently has . I can tint anything and have been around it since literally I was born , as well as install any audio equipment, but as far as custom installs I would really like to be considered excellent at what I do.

I know that the audio schools they offer, some say aren't worth going to, but I do believe a few companies offer weekend training type sessions for different things like routering, templates, box building, etc. So can anyone suggest the best route for me to take? I figured my best bet would be to completely understand electronics, would be just to start with some sort of book and just study as much as I can about electronics in general, but for everything else I think hands on experience would be best.

So can anyone point me in the right direction, or people to talk to? I know there's always threads about doing this as a business, but my situation is a little different since its a family business for 25+ years, and I already have the shop as well as distributers an everything, as well as clientele.

If you wanted to take some weekend classes to get the most bang for your buck seriously consider mobile solutions trainings. There is nothing but excellent things to be said for Bryan's offered trainings.

Been doing some searching, and saw his next class is in the next few weekends. Don't think I can make that since I have class and everything, but I definitely will be attending. Does he usually do another one at the end of the year, or is it going to be the beginning of next year before he has another training, anyone know? I may have to just call and see, but figured id ask anyways.

Biggest piece of advice I can give is to get MECP certified. It's the basic "degree" if you will of mobile audio/electronics, http://www.mecp.com/Home.aspx , that's their website where you can buy the book, take practice tests and even take your exam. Hope it helps.

I believe Sonus car Audio does classes from time to time. I've seen a few installs of there's and it seems like really good work.

Thanks for the replies everyone. Definitely will be doing one of the courses, if i plan on taking over one of the shops. I was checking out the mobile solutions fb page, and it looks like you definitely get your money worth. My dad is supposed to be closing on the scond shop this weekend, so that kind of makes it more of a reality. I appreciate all the suggestions.
