Tdawgthegreatest Posted September 11, 2013 Report Posted September 11, 2013 Hey everyone, I'm currently building a stereo for my girlfriend in her 1991 240sx. I'm putting 1 15" FI BL fully loaded, into a 3.125 cuft box. And here is where my problem starts. I've only ever built sealed boxes, since most of my vehicles have been single cab trucks with Shallow mount subwoofers in them. I've never built a ported box before, so figuring out the port size is a little tricky for me. So here are some pictures and specs. I was wandering around the internet trying to figure out a calculator for my port size. And some website *I cant find it now* said that a 5x4x12" port would tune my 3.125 cuft box to around the 35hz range. I'm trying to build a box similar to what Steve put in his Lexus with his SMD 15. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm not afraid to rebuilt this port if it isnt the right size. I just wanted some guidance before I started Fiberglassing the inside of the box. Onto the pictures! Here is the back of the box, I'm putting a 1" Piece of plexi on the back of the box. So that is why its open. And the front Like I said, any help would be greatly appreciated. I dont want this to sound like crap when its done. And please keep in mind that the back piece is going to be plexi, so I cant just have a port wrapping around the back of the box. Thanks everyone!
n8ball2013 Posted September 11, 2013 Report Posted September 11, 2013 Yoi have no port area at all. Guest Posted September 11, 2013 Report Posted September 11, 2013 you need a port like 4 times the size of that.
Guest Posted September 11, 2013 Report Posted September 11, 2013 and thats 3 cubes? sure as hell doesnt look like it... what calc did you use? the piece of shit RE audio one? or the one on the12volt.com?
89capricebass Posted September 11, 2013 Report Posted September 11, 2013 Definitely not enough port. I also agree that that looks awful small for 3 cubes. What are the dimensions? Tdawgthegreatest Posted September 12, 2013 Author Report Posted September 12, 2013 I cant remember the dimensions. But I called my dad (who is helping me build it) and he said on his paper its 3.38 cuft internal volume. The RE calculator said I needed a 9x8x149 inch port for it. Which i figured was wrong... how big of a port do you guys think this needs? Or would it need two? or....
Guest Posted September 12, 2013 Report Posted September 12, 2013 3 cubes needs around 42 sqin of port area. you have 20 sqin with the port you built. find port area by multiplying internal port width by port height.
Tdawgthegreatest Posted September 12, 2013 Author Report Posted September 12, 2013 So if I did a 9x5" port that would give me a port area of 45", how do I figure how long the port needs to be?
CstrokerV Posted September 13, 2013 Report Posted September 13, 2013 it would have to be 26 inches with a 9by5 so you need to build a new box dont forget add the displacment for sub port and bracing i use this when playing with boxes http://www.carstereo.com/help/Articles.cfm?id=31 my build http://www.stevemeadedesigns.com/board/topic/142505-small-build-log-4-dc-lvl3-10s-tl-update-link-to-rebuild/ http://www.stevemeadedesigns.com/board/topic/154258-rebuild-6-lvl3-12s-update-small-video-nothing-spectacular/ new build http://www.stevemeadedesigns.com/board/topic/188181-03-trailblazer-slow-build-8-dc-lvl3-12-m1-motor-m2-parts/
