12" & 15" Earthquake Sub. Build for bbeljefe

Recommended Posts

So here is a build I recently finished for a member (and friend) bbeljefe, the first of two old school Earthquake subs. This one is a 15" Earthquake Magma 4.0, that he has had for a while. He sent them to me ready to build, so I don't have many pics of them being "refurbished", but I do have a few. I will say they arrived to my house in brand new condition.
The plan was to build it into a beast, able to take much more power than originally. So here we go.

This is what it looked like brand new, years ago.

Here they both are years later

The landing and gap,

And after a ton of hard work (by him NOT ME)

So then he packed them up and sent them to me, to be "re-born"
I decided to start w/ the 15.

So here I am at first, test fitting everything

100_6468.jpg

He wanted to upgrade the terminals, I can see why..

100_6469.jpg

Using a 15" AR cone, with a standard half-roll foam surround. AR = Aluminum Reinforced (it has aluminum inside, see?)

100_6473.jpg

Then it's time to fit everything up. It all starts with the coil

100_6474.jpg

It is a flat wound D1.4 ohm 4 layer. Much better than the original..

100_6477.jpg

100_6479.jpg

So then the 3 DC med. stiff progressive roll spiders, and 1/4" spider spacer

100_6483.jpg

Then the top half

100_6484.jpg

Fits like a glove. Time to put it all together for good!

More ahead... next post

First thing is the leads. He wanted beefy sewn leads, so I tripled him up on the 1.055 leads. They will NOT be a fail point!

100_6489.jpg

I freakin hate sewing...

100_6494.jpg

100_6495.jpg

So then it was time to join the spiders to the coil, and join the leads, as well as the spacer

Bottom glue joint

100_6499.jpg

Little bit of rubber glue, for the stitching

100_6504.jpg

The spacer ring

100_6520.jpg

Now time to get the frame ready for glue

100_6527.jpg

The whole assembly, after shimming the coil and setting the top. A ready cone assembly

100_6529.jpg

And here she is getting "permanently set"

100_6535.jpg

100_6536.jpg

100_6538.jpg

Notice the terminal upgrade :)

100_6545.jpg

Coils reading perfect (cheap DMM)

100_6544.jpg

And that's all I got for now. I need to take more pics of the top now, so I'll post that soon.

Anyway, what do you think? (especially Brandon)

ill say it like i always say it. F##K the DD-1. I don't care if you or anyone buys one. (well i do, but that isn't my point) Get an O-scope in the very minimum and learn how to use it or you are just guessing your settings like every other noob. :) once you master the O-scope then step up to a DD-1 or even better a DD-1 Plus.

Oh hell yeah I'll post up a video. Imma stick it in my old t-line and try to break it. In, that is. ;-)

And the 12 already has a home down in Orlando. I'm building a box for it to go in my nephew's SUV. He'll be going from a Fosgate R-500.1 on a couple of Wal-Mart Pioneer tens in a prefabbed sealed box to a CT Sounds 1400.1 and that sub in a ¼ wave t-line.

He asked if I thought it would hit very much harder than his current setup.... I said we'll see.

Great work Trent. Thanks man!

Bad ass bro... keep the builds coming.

Thats cool. Im way too old to be upset by shit like that. Your name is winston. Your own parents hated you even before you were born.

My penis is bigger than your penis

I'm far from loud and my roof/headliner flaps around like Adam's ass on a windy day. I think it depends more on the structure of the vehicle.

At least... ~4 times the power, about 13% more piston area and who knows how much more xmax... at fucking least a doubling in sound pressure. :-)
