difference between low tuned ported & 4th order bp

What if the difference between a low tuned ported enclosure and a fourth order? I have the space for either one I'm just trying to figure out why fourth orders get all the hype compared to a low tuned ported enclosure

i believe its the efficiency gained when using a large ratio 4th, but you have to the right woofer for a 4th to work in your favor. Plus the power handling and cone control on the lows in a 4th is supposed to be better but im no expert. With that being said there are a ton of people who get loud and low on ported setups witch might end up being easier in most situations.

A ported box IS a 4th order, just a little REAL information for you. The comparison you're meaning to make its between a regular ported box(bass reflex) and a 4th order(single reflex bandpass enclosure). Both are considered 4th orders, but I believe the 4th you're referring to is the latter, the single reflex bandpass.

The real answer for your difference is simply your width of passband and where the rolloff of your frequencies are. A single reflex bandpass is NOT as efficient as a regular ported box but does offer good low end response and power handling. The power handling comes at a price, especially if the motor if the sub is in the sealed section. If you have the sub motor in the sealed section, you'll never smell it and won't know if you're giving it too much. If you invert the subs do the ass is in the ported chamber, you can smell if you're overpowering then and if you should back off.

And like mentioned, your driver is the determining factor whether or not you want to poor it in a normal ported enclosure vs. a bandpass enclosure. EBP(efficiency bandwidth product) needs to be taken into effect. EBP is determined by Fs divided by Qes. If the number is within a certain range, will determine which environment it will prefer.

It's not even a matter if what is louder. It's a matter of which driver is more suited for a certain environment over another. Some subs can do well in either a bandpass 4th OR regular ported box. Some subs heavily prefer one enclosure style over another. The SMDs for example, they have a VERY high EBP, making them HEAVILY suited for a regular ported enclosure, NOT a 4th order bandpass.

yeah, isnt it like 45 and under sealed boxes, 55 and over ported and 45-55 suited for either?

50 or less is suited for a sealed enclosure( acoustical suspension box)

50-90 can be in either enclosure.

90+ ported only pretty much. If I remember correctly, the SMD sits in the 115+ range. I will check
