Smokey619
Im posting here my question to see if anyone has experience with spray painting parts. Well im using Rustoleum Gloss black paint and everything looks real good, but as soon as i apply the Rustoleum crystal clear enamel the whole nice paint job goes down to the crapper. I have wet sanded it and then applied the clear over it but the clear always cracks and lifts up and looks horrible. I want to know some tips and tricks that you guys might have to apply the clear and being smooth as glass and not looking all wrinkled.
jk13
You're putting a clear coat over which gloss black? Most gloss paints are finish coat paints. Probably the two are not compatible and that's causing your issue especially if the black is a lacquer and the clear is enamel. Check with the paint store or Rustoleum DIY painters forum via Google. Static drops are my bag.
Smokey619
im using Rust-Oleum Gloss Protective Enamel (black) and Rust-Oleum Crystal Clear Enamel. But it still cracks i even applied the clear right after the paint and it cracked a little bit but it was not glossy. Both are enamel.

Soccerballzs
For your top coat use lacquer. Enamel takes too long to flash over and dry. You need to wait atleast 1 day to apply your top coat. Lacquer will flash over fast and will not activate your coating underneath it. Take your time and let the black dry for 24 hours. Use a car paint lacquer for top coat. Autozone and any of the car parts store will have it. Home Depot has lacquer also. Try not to use rustoluem for top coat!! http://www.stevemeadedesigns.com/board/garage/vehicle/2438-jeep-commander/I Pioneer P99RSAmpere 38002-Ampere 125/44-6.5 inch Hertz HSK XL Mids4-8 inch JL Audio ZR Midwoofer 2-5.25 Satori Mids2-Morel Tweeters, 2 Hertz Milles 3 inch on A pillars2-Hertz Silk tweeters DC Audio Level 5/12 Skyhigh Wire Mechman 320 XS Power D3100MO Funniest Thread of the Year 2013: http://www.stevemead...dy-being-a-pos/

Soccerballzs
Wait 24 hours. Enamel is not the same as lacquer. You are activating your base coat because it is not dry and your base coat fumes needs somewhere to go and it is making your top coat crack because it is still putting of gases from drying. It may feel dry but it is not. Been spraying lacquer and enamels for 32 years in cabinet shop. You are rushing your drying process. The more base coats the more drying time. http://www.stevemeadedesigns.com/board/garage/vehicle/2438-jeep-commander/I Pioneer P99RSAmpere 38002-Ampere 125/44-6.5 inch Hertz HSK XL Mids4-8 inch JL Audio ZR Midwoofer 2-5.25 Satori Mids2-Morel Tweeters, 2 Hertz Milles 3 inch on A pillars2-Hertz Silk tweeters DC Audio Level 5/12 Skyhigh Wire Mechman 320 XS Power D3100MO Funniest Thread of the Year 2013: http://www.stevemead...dy-being-a-pos/
