SQ SUBARU Posted November 10, 2013 Report Posted November 10, 2013 Ok my buddy is running 2 mono amps for his spl setup, total watts is 6000 watts rms. (3k each amp) he currently has stock electrical, which is 120 amp alt and a basic 600cca battery. What would he need electrical wise to run 6k watts?? I suggested getting a high output alt 250 amp and upgrading the battery under the hood and add a second battery exactly the same in the trunk? Plus doing the big 3 plus all the power / ground using 0awg? Would this be adequate?? My calculations: 6000 watts rms total, current pull: Ohms law: Current = power / voltage 6000 / 14.4volts = 416 amps TOTAL current draw 416 multiplied by 0.5 (50 percent) average current draw, depending on volume etc. 6000 watts rms has a potential of pulling the total 416 amps but it depends on volume etc, correct?? So, that equals around 208 amps (average) current draw? Can someone with more experience tell me if my calculations are correct? Is there a better more accurate way of calculating average current draw? And mainly what would he need to be able to run 6k watts rms daily? What size alt, how many batteries and of what size etc? Cheers guys. Will appreciate the help/advice. nocturnalrites101 Posted November 10, 2013 Report Posted November 10, 2013 x 75% efficentcy so 546 amps max draw + stock electrical drawling for the motor, highs amp, ac,blower motor, rad fans, power windows etc atleast 2 d3100s or a d7500 . and a larger alt. atleeast 1 run of 2/0 gauge wire
Broke_Audio_Addict Posted November 10, 2013 Report Posted November 10, 2013 Don't forget voltage drop increases your current draw. That being said a lot of people's definition of "music" is a clipped 30 hz sine wave with some 80 IQ knuckle head grunting about committing crimes and his genitals.
Pioneerchuck Posted November 10, 2013 Report Posted November 10, 2013 If I were you, Id want at least a 275 or larger alt, a D3400 under the hood, and at the very least 2 D3100s in the back.
SQ SUBARU Posted November 11, 2013 Author Report Posted November 11, 2013 Yea I think that should be enough. At what voltage should I be worried if it does drop- Under 13v?? Because once the current exceeds what the High output alt can do it relies on the batteries? And when would the batteries recharge if the current being drawn is from the batteries instead of the alt? Because the car has to be going in order for the two batteries to charge? twisted1 Posted November 11, 2013 Report Posted November 11, 2013 Im running 5k on 250amp alt an couple xp3000 batts. Start voltage around 14.7 an drops to 13.3ish full tilt. Im also running about 4 runs of 2/0 copper weld cable an hqve 6 runs for grounds. Stock alt on just 2500 I was dipping into the 11s so I couldn't have that 09 mustang gt
TRON Posted November 11, 2013 Report Posted November 11, 2013 Trying to calculate how much current the amplifiers will draw is more complex than just a bit of ohms law, but the basics can get you a rough estemate. I ususaly go by the fuse for the amplififer, its a good way to ensure you'll have more than enough to suplly what the amplifier could potentialy draw. I have a DC 3.5k that has a fuse rating of 300a so I went with a 300a alt, and decided to get a second one for excess. Topped it off with two d3400's under the hood and a pair of 1/0 runs everywhere. I dont get much voltage drop, so I'd say I could run up to 6kw. Remember: No such thing a overkill on electrical... twisted1 Posted November 11, 2013 Report Posted November 11, 2013 4 runs to amps (tool maker) Truck is body lifted so I had to overdo my grounds. 4 off the amps to batteries then couple to frame an couple to front alt an battery 09 mustang gt
twisted1 Posted November 11, 2013 Report Posted November 11, 2013 My experience is that if your not running correct ohm load to high amp it will cause cap whistle, ground loop noise. 09 mustang gt
