99AUXR Posted January 30, 2014 Report Posted January 30, 2014 Hi guys just recently installed a high amp alternator in mustang. On a long drive today the alternator almost caught on fire it was that good damn hot. Needless to say I need a new alternator and serpentine belt However any ideas of the causes, Alternator manufacturer failure? or could it be caused by the fact I didnt get around to up grading the alternator to Battery +ve wire. Any ideas would be much appreciated. Cheers, Brad BF XR6T with Focal Audio
MECHMAN Posted January 30, 2014 Report Posted January 30, 2014 Do you have the alternator grounded properly? 1-888-MECHMAN www.Mechman.com [email protected]

99AUXR Posted January 30, 2014 Author Report Posted January 30, 2014 The new alternator wasn't from fleabay, was rated for 200 amps. Was un aware of grounds needed to be made bigger. Was just relying on the alt chasis to engine. but this sort of makes sense as the roush mustangs have there alternator mounted on top with a different to the standard GT. So roush use the GT alternator but remove 2 of the 4 mounting lugs. This may be alright to do with the standard alt but I'm guessing the hi amp couldn't cope with two mountains lugs being removed? So do I need to run a wire from one of the bolts that holds the chasis of the alternator together to the battery -ve? BF XR6T with Focal Audio

We recommend to do at least a 1/0 AWG from the alternator to the battery for high amp applications. A mounting bolt would be sufficient for a ground. IMO I would use the same size cable - & + form the alternator directly to the battery. 1-888-MECHMAN www.Mechman.com [email protected]

99AUXR Posted January 30, 2014 Author Report Posted January 30, 2014 Okay so would those wires and lack of be the cause for the alt burning out? Will a gates belt be fine? BF XR6T with Focal Audio
